hello, I'm new to the forum. My son has a CI, he plays football and wrestles. I was wondering if anybody has any helpful hints on the way they coach the deaf athletes in these two sports. I've coached him in the sports prior, next year he'll be coached at the high school level and with different coaches. He is also interested in the wrestling olympics. Any help or advice in this would be really appreciated. Is there any national wrestling events he could participate in?

What particular advice are you looking for?Communication issues, CI safety or ability to play the sports?

a few things. is there a helmet for football that he could wear his implant securely and safely? In wrestling I was wondering what some other wrestling coaches do to communicate with their wrestler while they are out on the mat wrestling. Also, if anyone could get me in the right direction in finding national and international wrestling compitition.

I work at a deaf school and one of our deaf high schoolers just won a Wrestling championship against a hearing school/opponents. I can ask his mom.

He doesnt have a CI so I cant answer any questions about a CI but the communication needs, I can get from his mom.

Helmets and cochlear implants I look so I can hear….

you know, it probably be easier if he learn ASL so they can sign instructions to him while his processor is off.

my son signs. I'm learning, I told the coaches he'll learn the signals for the plays, he reads lips, and the teammates will start to pick up the signs and signals. As long as the coach and my son have a way to communicate even if the have their own sign between each other is fine. Does anyone have any info on national or international wrestling tournaments. Are there any wrestlers out there that could give me any helpful hints that I may not know about? Thanks

I asked the mom of that boy and she wanted to know if you mean by schools or by private when asking about national and international wrestling.

However, for international wrestling, check this out..

International Committee of Sports for the Deaf - Sports

thanks for the info given. My son goes to a public school and uses an interpeter. His goal is to wrestle in the Olympics, I know a couple to the Olympic wrestling coaches near by where we live, I was wondering if I could get some info for Deaf Olympics, or other national competition in which includes wrestling. Is there a Deaf Junior Olymics? My son wrestles for our wrestling club, and a traveling team. With those teams he has wrestled in some near by national wrestling tournaments. This weekend he is wrestling in a national tournament with the travel team.

Oh, he wants to be in the Olympics someday? Wow..that means he would have to dedicate a majority of his life to wrestling and hire a coach with years of experience on the national level.

I think there was an Olympic swimmer who was deaf recently. I will have to look that one up and see if there is any info for deaf professional athletes.

I grew up playing in competitive sports and played on the national level but never Inernationally.

We live in Maryland. There are some great coaches here and in Delaware, that have Olympic and National Team experience. He has a huge heart for the sport and a great drive. He is "very competitive." I currently do a lot of his coaching, but I'd like him to get to the next level of competition. We know the destination we just need some help in finding the best course.

Wow..I live in Maryland too!

Me, Baltimore area..home of Phelps.:)

I can ask around some more. There is a large Deaf community here. Someone has to know someone...
