Deaf Rider Leads Women's Motocross Series - WVNS-TV - WVNSTV.com
The normal sounds of a race mean nothing to motocross racer Ashley Fiolek. The women's pro rookie champion from last season has been deaf her entire life.
She says her parents have not only been her translators but also her inspiration, "Well my dad he raced and was brought up on it. My parents never told me no because I was deaf."
Since Ashley can't hear, she uses her surroundings, "I learn how to shift the bike by vibrations."
But, there are times Fiolek just has to deal with her disability, "Sometimes i can't change my lines because you know I've hit neutral over the handle bars. "
Still Ashley never gets discouraged and always stays determined. The 18 year old is only the girl on her team this season.
She's constantly raising the bar and says she wants to get the chance to race against the boys in the future.
