NBA Fines Mavericks' Cuban $250,000
By JAIME ARON DALLAS (AP) - Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was fined $250,000 by the NBA on Tuesday for his outbursts following Game 5 of the NBA finals. Cuban was cited for ``several acts of misconduct'' committed after Dallas lost 101-100 in overtime to the Heat in Miami on Sunday night. Furious with several calls, Cuban went onto the floor to vent directly to official Joe DeRosa. He then stared down and screamed toward commissioner David Stern and a group of league officials, from the court, then the stands. He later used profanity during a postgame session with the media. The fine was announced hours before the Mavericks played host to the Heat in Game 6 of the NBA finals. Miami led the series 3-2. Cuban said Monday he was bracing for the fine, his second this postseason. It showed in his reaction to the penalty: ``I'm fine with it,'' he wrote in an e-mail. ``Get the humor there. Fine with it.'' The NBA said it would have no further comment on the matter. Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki was so frustrated with the way Dallas lost Game 5 that he kicked the ball into the stands, knocked over a stationary bicycle and kicked at something else on his way to the locker room. On Monday, he was fined $5,000 for booting the ball. ``(Cuban) is a very emotional guy, too,'' Nowitzki said. ``He was upset, as we all were, about the loss, obviously the whole last sequence that went down.'' Cuban has been fined at least $1,455,000 and suspended from three games since buying the team in January 2000. The exact total of his punishment tab isn't known because the league doesn't always publicize action against team owners. Cuban says he matches every dollar with a charitable donation. This also marks the 10th known time that Cuban has been penalized. The biggest fine was $500,000 - the most ever against one person - in January 2002 for comments that included saying he wouldn't hire the league's head of officiating to manage a Dairy Queen. Since then, the only other acknowledged fine came last month, when he was assessed $200,000 - $100,000 for going onto the court during a playoff game in San Antonio and another $100,000 for an entry on his blog criticizing the way the league selects officials for the playoffs. Cuban also has been riled up several times since his last fine. When Jason Terry was suspended from Game 6 of the Spurs series for punching Michael Finley, Cuban said he ``didn't understand it and not quite so politely, I told the league so.'' In the conference finals, he went into the stands to help the wife of coach Avery Johnson when she was in an argument. Third-string center D.J. Mbenga went, too, and he was suspended for six games. When announcing that, the league said Cuban was off the hook because ``his actions did not violate NBA rules and were not otherwise inappropriate.'' Last Friday, after Jerry Stackhouse was suspended for a hard foul on Shaquille O'Neal in Game 4, Cuban said, ``It makes no sense at all,'' adding that there were several hard hits against Dallas ``all without response from the league.'' He then wore a Stackhouse jersey to Game 5. Cuban also mocked his persona with a blog entry apparently aimed at drawing more viewers to his appearance on David Letterman's late-night show, writing, ``I already have picked out my next charity to donate to.'' Also Tuesday, Cuban posted a blog entry in response to a column in the Miami Herald that quoted him as saying, ``Your league is rigged'' during his tirade after Game 5. ``That's a complete insult to the players on the court and the incredible amount of effort they put into preparing for and playing the games,'' he wrote. ``The NBA couldn't rig the games if it wanted to. And it doesn't want to. It's that simple.'' He wrote that he hates the idea of any wrongdoing, calling each theory ``a business hole I have to work harder to dig us out of.'' His solution: Better explanations by the league of what happened and why. ``I think it would help the perception of our game,'' he wrote. ``I think it would help fans better understand not only the rules of the NBA, but also the nuances, strategies and challenges of the game.'' 06/20/06 16:30 © Copyright The Associated Press. Now I need to call my 84 year old grandmother in Los Angeles via VP tonight to share in the celebration - she may be 84 years old but she has been in love with Shaq since his stint with Lakers years ago - I bet that she is dancing now despite her bad hips!!!!

Show me the love!
I'm extremely glad the Heat won! Whoo! I'm glad for all the veterans on the team, now that they've tasted their first championship. I'm jubilant to see Dwyane win the Finals, and I hope it's first one of many to come.

MVP award
Hey,
Does anyone know if Wade won the MVP award or not? I am trying to find an article on that, but can't. I went to bed immediately after the game was over last night, so I didn't hear who won. And, btw...MIAMI WAS AWESOME!! Hi-Five to all Miami Heat fans who watched the game last night! ![]() I was the last couple of seconds of the game last night, but now I'm ![]() |

Edit
I can't edit my last post, but I found the article I was looking for, and I answered my own question.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060621/...ade_dc_1<br /> Wade scoffs at Jordan comparisons By Steve Ginsburg Wed Jun 21, 4:36 AM ET DALLAS (Reuters) - Dwyane Wade insists he is not ready to be compared with Michael Jordan. ADVERTISEMENT Wade, was certainly Jordanesque, however, in leading the Miami Heat to a 95-92 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday, his team clinching their first title in franchise history. "No comparison," said Wade after reporters likened his performance to the former Chicago Bulls great. "He was my greatest role model as an athlete. "Besides my father at home, he was kind of like my second father because he's the guy that I watched and felt like I was a part of Michael Jordan. "The comparison is flattering but at the same time there will never be another Jordan." Led by Wade's heroics, Miami swept the Mavericks in four straight games after losing the first two. Wade averaged 34.7 points in the series, the third highest scoring average for a player in his first Finals, and was unanimously named the most valuable player. The Mavericks opened the series hoping to handcuff Shaquille O'Neal and force someone else to beat them. When O'Neal played solidly but not spectacularly, Dallas honed in on Wade. But the third-year guard fought off double teams -- even triple teams -- with an array of acrobatic moves to the hoop or a dependable long-range jump shot. "I've never had a player like this," said Heat coach Pat Riley, whose four title teams with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s featured Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. "I have not been around a player who can absolutely at times beat five guys, and then at the same time, make great plays to players." In addition to his 36 points, Wade had 10 rebounds and five assists, including a key dish to James Posey with less than four minutes left. BIGGEST PLAY Posey hit a three-pointer that put the Heat up 87-81 with less than four minutes to go in what Riley described as the biggest play of the game. "Some of that stuff, you just can't teach," Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said of Wade's feel for the game. "When a player is making those kind of plays it's really no tricky play. "He's beating double-teams, he's beating triple teams. There's no tricks there. It's a straight isolation play." After losing the first two games of the series in Dallas, Wade averaged 40 points during the Heat's three consecutive wins in Miami. Johnson said Wade had a lot of will to win. "You've seen a lot of players, like Jordan, that have had those type of performances," he said. "We tried a lot of different things. But he just had a lot of desire to get it done." O'Neal admits he came to Miami from the Lakers two years ago because of Wade. "Dwayne Wade is a great player, very, very humble, keeps everybody involved and he's the reason I came to Miami," said the 13-time All-Star. "He's a special player." |

Went to the parade today. It was nice to see my hardwood heroes up close, basking in fandom adulation. One kid did have a watergun full of orange Gatorade and pumped the crowd with it! I don't mind water being sprayed, as the day was hot, but Orange Gatorade?
![]() Shaq actually got out of the motorcade and high fived a couple of people along the parade route. All of a sudden, a flash mob ran towards him! Thankfully, officials quickly whisked him back onto the motorcade! Dwyane, the MVP, wisely stood in his motorade and waved to the parade crowd.Got a little bit sunburnt, but was a good experience! |
