Fingerspell lowercase letters

I took seven semesters of ASL/deaf culture in college and this topic never came up. I googled it to no avail.

Many times, especially in technical situations, the case of a letter is important. An example would be if you were telling someone your password. You also might be spelling a company name where case mattered, like eBay (and perhaps the other person was writing it down on a check where case was important).

So how do you fingerspell lowercase letters in these scenarios?

There is a sign for "capital letter", so if I were spelling a name that required a capital in a place other than the beginning (ie: John LeBlanc), I would sign J-o-h-n pause - L -e -<sign for capital letter> b (emphasized) - l-a-n-c.

Noob way to do it.

My way:

Positioning of the hand. Higher than others = capital.

Perfect. So lowercase is assumed. What's the sign for capital letter? Link or description is fine.

Thanks.

haha Sunny, no worries, I have no delusions that I don't look like a complete hearie no matter where I am or what I do. The fact that I am most fluent in the various ways to say "whoa"/"slow down"/"that blew right by me", gives me away every time lol.

How about - upper case- you climb up a chair
- lower case- you crouch

sorry I couldn't help myself (head hangs in shame)
seriously- how about simply indicate with the other hand either U or L ??

There is no capital rule in ASL, sorry. No such thing and I never thought of this til you asked.

That's how I do it too. I've seen this done for years since I was a kid.

Humor aside - why chime in on something you don't know anything about?

"indicating" anything with another hand with "either the letters U or L" is downright confusing, and not to mention it goes against all the ASL rules.

I feel bad having to correct this because I don't want misinformation being spread.

I had no idea there was a "capital" sign, but I also never thought of using/had to use it. I thought I'd do something like what PFH said if I ever needed to indicate something was capital.

Plan B if they don't understand my hand movement/position: sign "big" in the most showy, theatrical way possible for each capital letter.
