Mom is going to learn ASL!!
So after years of my mom being anti-sign... she is finally going to be taking an ASL class!!! After the past year, seeing how much more I understand in Sign than i do spoken english, seeing how much happier I am, and (I believe this might be why she is doing it) because my niece is HoH and using sign language. No matter the reason though, I am very excited for my mom to learn ASL!! it is going to make things so much easier to chat with her... and we will have far fewer miscommunications I think. I am very excited!!! Finally, my mom will be able to have an actual conversation with her
daughter!!!

I know!!! I am so excited!!! she texted me last night... telling me she just got back from her first ASL class and wanted to skype. she was so proud of herself to being able to do the alphabet! I was very proud of her too!! then she called me (thankfully via vrs, she has FINALLY after almost 21 years of knowing i'm deaf learned I CAN'T talk on the phone) and told me that she chatted with her ASL instructor (who is Deaf) and told him she has a Deaf daughter, she said she can finally admit I am Deaf and not just HoH!!! He said he was proud of her for learning sign even though I am almost 23, and that we may end up having a better relationship. I am so happy!!!

You have gone on your journey of discovering your Deafness, and now your mom is on her journey. It is a wonderful thing that she has decided to explore your Deaf identity as well as her identity of mother to a Deaf daughter. I know from experience that she will learn much about herself in the process. Hugs to you and your mom.

I'm excited that your Mom wants to learn ASL. My girlfriend and her Mom each want to take ASL class. It costs $125 each plus $30 for one book. I don't know how much it's costing your Mom. I told my girlfriend that it's too much money. Are you sure you want to do that? They said yes, I am worth it!!!
I bet your Mom feels you are worth it regardless of how much it costs. |

That is what and why every hearing parents should do in first place as soon as their young Deaf child(ren) are able to understand and communicate in ASL, starting with Baby Signs.
That is so wonderful, Ash!

Oh I agree, I think it is so important for deaf children to be exposed to sign from the very first day of birth, or at least from when they are diagnosed. I am so excited that she is learning!!!

Edit to add: All due respect to Ash's mom, but Ash is now 23. I do believe I read a post by you, Jillio that said something to the effect of, "doesn't matter how they communicate, but that they can communicate". I think it's great Ash's mom is learning ASL, but that wasn't necessary to throw in that comment about MCE. It had nothing to do with this thread. |

"Some children, even with an implant, simply are not talkers. We never know exactly who will be able to develop oral skills and who won't. There are so many variables other than just the level of sound that a person can perceive. However, the fact that you are using sign language with your children is something that will provide them with the skills they need to succeed, no matter how well they are able to do with oral language. The most important thing is that they have language, not speech. It matters that they are able to communicate, not how they communicate. Keep up the good work." Jillio

I understand ASL is a language. My point is the earlier the better, and the comment about "superficially embracing" whatever was not necessary. The important thing is that a DHH child have access to language and communication.
