If this is used in a legal setting then just spell it out.

In casual conversations I've seen it signed as 'black' and mail is spelled. I don't know of a specific concept sign for it.

Sorry in advance if this is an embarrassing newbie question, but I'm a new ASL learner. My name is Sirius (yeah, like the Harry Potter character... ) after the Canis Major star, because it's a family tradition to name children after stars and constellations. So I was wondering if there are signs for the major stars and constellations? Or are they concepts (like 'dog', 'constellation', 'big', 'star'), or spelled out, or something else I haven't learned yet? I haven't found reference to them anywhere, except the signs for 'star' and 'constellation'. Thanks!

Got a new one...is "poison" the same sign as "medicine"?

If so, would I sign "food + poison/medicine" for food poisoning? (Sadly, this has come up twice recently that I would need that sign.)

The one I see is similar to the sign for "BONES" (likely because many poisons and corrosives are labelled with crossed bones on the bottles)

Both "S" hands,arms up & crossed at the wrist to form an "x" shape, dominant hand closest to body. Then the dominant hand taps the wrists together twice.

From what I've seen, for clarification it's typically fingerspelled the first time and the sign attached to the fingerspelling, then for the rest of the converstaion the sign is used on it's own.

The other sign, like you mentioned is like medicine - also fingerspelled initially.

Which you'd use would depend on context, for example if someone was poisoned or OD'd on a medication, then I'd use the "medicine" version. If it was a child getting into and drinking something like windex, pinesol etc I'd personally use the crossed arms one.

For food poisioning, I'd probably say: ate spoiled food, became sick - know name (fs)"food poisioning"

Yeah, it was bad salad sample at grocery store and a couple of weeks later, bad decision to go to Wendy's. I wasn't sure if "poison" would be the right sign, since it isn't actually POISON, but bad/contaminated/spoiled food. (I always compare to Spanish, you wouldn't use the word "veneno" [venom, poison] to talk about what I'm talking about so I assumed that the ASL signs for poison and bad food were different.)

In that specfic case ?

First set up the bag, then the wind (outside) and show the wind moving the bag.

I would sign it as a classifier. Sign bag then show it drifting in the wind. Same as how you would sign a leaf falling from a tree.

In the sentence and context provided it would be a classifier (not a sign) so ASLpro.com and other sign sites and books won't really help.

If you needed to clarify the motion of drifting, you could follow the drifting movement with "KNOW , fs-d r i f t" I guess.

Agreed. In fact, it would be the bag itself that would be "drifting" so it's the movement of the BAG sign that would show it blowing about, and maybe also changing shape as it poufs in and out. (Depends on what you're trying to depict.)

FOOD, SERVED/BROUGHT, SEQUENCES THREE

Then, if more details are needed, you can enumerate (in the order they are served):

1-SALAD, SOUP FINISH

2-MEAT, POTATOES, VEGETABLE FINISH

3-DESSERT FINISH
