communication with deaf blind people

Hi everyone,

I work with people with multiple disabilities and some of them have a visual and hearing impairment (they are also mentally challenged). I would like to understand better how deafblind people perceive the world. I've found some information about communication aids on www.deafblind.com. Are there any deafblind people here who would like to talk to me about their daily lives?

I do not know anyone who is Deaf/Blind in real Life. But, I once saw a movie about this young Girl Who is Blind/Deaf and Teacher helped her with learning Sign Language by hands. Feeling/Smelling things to realized what they are. It is so Sad it makes me Have Tears coming out of My Eyes. It just I feel bad for them that they cannot be able to hear and see and How hard it would be for them not knowing what is around them.

Does your Children in your Class feel that way? Maybe you Could tell us what it is like. I am Very Interesting knowing about that. :ily:
 
Cheri -- that is Helen Keller (deaf/blind) student with teacher -- spellfingering

I seen deaf/blind in real life and I have hard time to remmy to sign with their hands because they can not see me or my signs -- I keep forgetting take their hands use signs or spellfingering -- I know feel strange but they understands my signs. :D

Hi Sarah

Oh yeah, my client does tell me about his life. Tell me how frustrated he was being not able seeing. He always wants to drive a car. We become very closer and give him alot of support. Everytime, I arrived my work. He knows, I am here because of smelling. He smiles and grab my arm. He is very sweet man.

My best friend who is deaf-blind person. We have known each other for years.

Some people didnt realize to keep your sign langague under their hands while you talked with him or her. Some people sign as deaf person. They sometime forgot to keep their hands on their hands. :)

When you talked with deaf-blind person, your shoulder and hands become tired in the end of day because of weight pressure on your muscle while you do TSL with deaf-blind person.
 
If my memory serves me correctly, LadyDuke is Deaf-blind (haven't seen her around in ages) and I think racheleggert is also deaf-blind. Almost forgot....I think Nancy who occasionally posts here is hard of hearing with visual issues.
 
yea i did work for a blind and deaf person, i sign normal to her and she uddy what i say and spelling letters too.. i love work with deaf and blind people.. :)

I thought I saw LadyDuke in another forum called Deaf Notes...Unless I may mistake her by someone else...

Honestly, I don't know anyone who is blind and deaf here in AllDeaf but DeafDyke may be right one person that is here....*waiting for her to respond on that one*....

That is only one, I had hard to remmy to sign with my hands with their hands. :confused: I tried my best to talk with them and enjoy chatting. :)

Sabrina -- yes sometimes i too would forget to put hands under their hands -- i have a question tho -- what is "TSL" i get the SL part as in sign language but the T qq translating signs qq :confused:

MizzDeaf -- yes u are right -- its Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan :)

Yep you are right...
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Sometimes when its full dark, I would use tactile like on Greyhound bus when I chat with my best friend on way back and forth to and from MN and TX. I really hate being deafblind but oh well, it is life that I must to live... If you happen to be in MN on June 20th, there will be Helen Keller Picnic, and I will get details at later date and let you know...
 
I'm a pending certifed deaf interpeter now, and i been doing quite a bit of this, Yesterday i had the most intresting experince meeting someone who's a not a low function no no, just limited in her langague barrier and as Vice president i had to translate alot of different signing, from ASL to Gestical Signing ( known as ML ( mime lanaguage) And it was a good experince for me for those who are in the forgein born lanagugae, her whole family's deaf and it was an extrodinary experince learning infos and etc. She got the understanding of the next function meeting and since she didn t know how to read it i got the map and showed her where and when it will be next function which is two weeks away,So that helped me learn more abt the other side of poeple's lives, and how they managed to communicate in all aspect which is a great benifit for me, She's also going to the unveristy of hawaii and taking langauge courses and to understand how to read as well, and i wished her the best of luck in her endevors! :) :D
 
BY the way i know that was SORt of off topics but is related a bit too, I also was impressed with the movivatation of how the deaf and blind can communicate as well, found out a good friend of mine will be here for a event soon. and was requested to guide her around which i had no plm in doing, So she hasn't decided on a date and etc. BUT she herself is deaf and blind when i first met her it was awkward to sign she told me just talk like a normal person and if i don't get anything she would stop me and ask me to repeat it was fun to learn abt that :) Im so amazed of the indenpendecy of the poeple who really movivates themselves to do what they belive in doing! I just admire them for thier aggressive methods of life!
 
I did meet and actually communicated with a deaf/blind lady when her hearing husband and family brought her over to a deaf club where I was attending several years ago. I was really 'touched' by how well she was able to communicate and showing patience with those who would momentarily forget to 'keep' their hand(s) against her own hand. I was truly inspired by her courageous efforts and her keen ability with communicating with deaf/hoh people. Her smile was radiant and the way she was communicating with several of us shown far more interest and courtesy towards everyone than I would have imagined. She remarkably reminded me of the autobiography of Helen Keller which I have read several times....

This movie that you were talking about... this little girl who has grown up... Shes still around. I think... Unless I am behind of news. Her name is Helen Keller.

She died some years ago -- She died in 1968. Helen Keller Bio

I studied tactile sign language for both ASL and AUSLAN -- as I've worked with deafblind clients here and there. Also have a friend here who's deafblind as well. Have no problems communicating with her because I'm aware of the tactile sign language to use with her. :)
 
I know how to communicate with the deaf-blind

I've known sign language(ASL) for 29 yrs, and I know how to commuicate with the deaf-blind.
They'll take your hands and feel your signs as you sign.
Thats called tatcille interperting.
It also depends how much vision they have is to how to talk to them.
