Australia currently recognizes Auslan as a community language but not an official one. Currently Australia has a national language, which is English, but in recognition of its cultural diversity does not acknowledge English as an official language, in fact it has no official languages.

Not surprised.

ASL isn't an official language in the States, and English is not the official language of the United States either.

The deaf advocate organisation known as Deaf Australia are advocating with the government to get the Auslan language to be official language only that it was legally recongised in 1987.

Yes, In a way, I agree. they recongize English so much that it become their main focus in the school system. Grammar, writing, speech therapy, etc. I would love people treat Sign Language the same way -- that is, treat it as it is important for people to know Auslan as it is important for people to know how to speak English (and speak it well too). The gov't spend all their money making sure people get this type of education on English.

Why would AUSLAN would be the official language when English ISN'T even an official language of Australia in the FIRST PLACE?

Australian Govt does not want additional official languages when English will suffice as everyone speaks that here

An all out war has erupted between Deaf Australia and Deafness Forum.

Deaf Australia:
Auslan as an official language – YES, Deaf people want it!
Deaf Australia calls on Deafness Forum to withdraw its current discussion paper and questionnaire on whether Deaf people think Auslan (Australian Sign Language) should be recognised as an official language.
