Ignore it. Most of the YouTube out there are done by Level 1 signers who have forgotten their lessons. Gotta admire their efforts though...

I wish she wouldn't mouth almost every word. Keeps her from using proper facial gestures. Bad grammar.

But she gets the okay from me cause she's wearing an In N Out t-shirt. In N Out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pre-video transcript

As asked for

Hey guys!
Uh so I have an update
um I got new memory card and so songs
or videos can be um a lot longer and they're not going to be cut off after like 3 & 1/2 minutes so...
yay! for that *gives two thumbs up*.
Um... also I want to give a shout out to Heather who lives in Pennsylvania.
Um I just want to say her photography is amazing.
Like Ima put a link somewhere... around here... and you can go check her out.
*gestures around open space by her head which leads to a myspace link*
And I know you're going to love her just as much as I do.
Um but at her, you know, comment her, like her, love her, great!
Um...But! I'm going to do Halo by Beyoncé and Ima dedicate it to my boyfriend!
*blows kiss to camera*

Dude what IS it with kids saying "um" every other word, um like um!

I think she was still using spoken English while signing. See how the ASL got compromised and I couldnt understand what she was signing but she is young. Cute kid.

Haha, I'd be surprised if she were even 16. Definitely a little cutie though.

She wasn't speaking but lip-syncing with the song's vocalization.

I could hear and see it, and I still didn't "get" all of it.

I didn't take notes, and I watched it only once but I recall that she used the sign GLORY for "grace".

At least a hearing young person is interested in signing. We can hope that she will continue her interest and education in signing.

Actually, there's a place in her profile where she says she is 17 and a senior in HS. She just lists her age as 20 for some reason...

Also says she's only been signing for a year...

This could be a side topic or off topic, or right on.. but what do you all think about youtube signers in general?..

Souggy said" Ignore it. Most of the YouTube out there are done by Level 1 signers who have forgotten their lessons. Gotta admire their efforts though..."

and I know that a good amount of these "ASL music videos" is more SEE or PSL, but some I have found to be good like abronste and CaptainValor (captain even has the english/ASL translation for his videos that i am using to get a grasp of the grammar).

The reason I am asking is for now, I am learning sign (just found out I was HoH, for those that missed the late onset forum notes from me), and really have no "teacher" but myself and the net (lame I know, but classes are a goal if I can find some that I can take without conflicting my work schedule).
So, what do you think of some of the videos. I have tried watching the vlogs, but many of them go so fast I catch like one in ten words. any signers that make vlogs or music that you find better then others?..

I have said before that I don't like vocal music, student signers signing songs, and usually people jump all over me for it . But I think it is dumb.

Try deafvideotv instead.

I think a lot of it is just beginning ASL students (hearing) appropriating sign language, and they look rather silly to native signers (or even advanced learners). You wouldn't sing an Italian opera with only a year of Italian and voice training, would you? I'm only a level III signer, but even I can tell when they're bad. Nevertheless, there are definitely a few that are quite good on youtube. AllyBallyBabe is one of them. She's pretty cute herself. Also, WokamukaASl has a few good ones.

The best ASL music videos, by far, are at d-pan. They are done very professionally and artistically.

I love d-pan! Michael DiMartino is another on Youtube. Then again, I'm a newbie signer so *almost* anything would look good to me but I can recognize some grammatical problems with the girl!
Michael DiMartino

Tell me what you think of this guy. I thought he was really good in expression and from what I can tell, again newbie signer here, correct grammar. He's also performed for Gallaudet. Warning however, as he signs "Womanizer", "Love Game" and "Circus" some images may be inappropriate for small children (he does take off his shirt too) so forewarning!

I agree. You dont sign songs all that often in the deaf world.
they usually butcher it.

While the song is beautiful, overall I admire her effort in doing her best. So, I do appreciate the fact that she took the time to learned sign language and shared this song with us. I couldn't be more than happy.

In my opinion, I dont think a non-fluent user should attempt to sign any songs. It loses the meaning and feelings of the songs.

How will they become fluent if they don't try and practice? If songs make practice more enjoyable, they are more likely to keep at it. She's young so she has time to improve.

Practice is one thing, but posting videos online that people who are also learning take to be correct is hazardous.

People like to have a "reason" to put up videos of themselves on the Internet and signing a song is one of the many excuses people come up with to try to make themselves more "interesting" than the other people on YouTube.

Anyone who uses the internet should know better than to accept what they see on youtube with anything other than a grain of salt.

Why not just round all those up, put them in an arena, and make them sing/sign to each other until they lose it?
