Most of the time, no. Probably becuase I speak a lot less that I did growing up and dont stress about having the perfect speech skills. Life is too short to always please hearing people.

Hear Again

I've grown up with hearing most of my life, so I don't find speaking difficult.

However, there are times where I mispronounce words (despite the fact that I have CIs), but I don't spend my time worrying about something I can't help.

If a hearing person wants to criticize me for that, it's their
problem -- not mine.

I don't speak bad, I speak very well and most of the time, people can understand me.

I never stopped talking, even when I became totally deaf. I talk all the time, to my boys, friends, family etc. I know ASL also, and my boys use it whenever I've missed what they were trying to say.....One doctor told my ex many years ago, that sooner or later, no one would be able to understand me....It hasn't happened!

The thought of not being able to "talk" really terrified me. That's why I kept on talking and used ASL rarely, only with other deafies.

I've never had trouble....well there are some words that are hard to pronounce but my family members would help me to pronounce it correctly. But there are times that I do have hard time understanding what hearing people are saying b/c their speech sucks by mumbling or something like that.

I can't believe this. On a normal basis I talk normally without issues. I went to oral school for the deaf. But every week when I volunteer to comment and critique some of my classmate's art projects, I find myself stuttering or having difficulty pronouncing simple words mid-sentence. Its like trying to start the engine in the winter where the car just doesn't want to start. Same thing with my mouth! It's so frustrating cause I am used to smooth dialogue and one time I noticed that I creeped my teacher out cause I stuttered out of the blue.

Sometimes when I'm talking to some hearing people or if I'm in a rush like today I had to go into the pasty shop and order food. My mind went total blank and my words came out totally wrong, the woman in the shop knew what I meant and I think she was aware I was deaf, as she spoke very clearly and used some gestures. It shows there is nice hearing people out there, you just have to find them. Not that I'm saying all hearing people are nasty. I mean the minority of them

I know difficult to speak to communication to hearing person. I guess hard to voice to speak.. i am very hard to speak. that is good.. I am hard to voice speak that is hard. That is not easy.. Sometimes I speak to voice..

I have a bit of an "accent" but most people think/assume that I'm just not from the Southern US. I was born and raised in the south but I have absolutely no southern accent. I thank speech therapy for that.

I work at a major research hospital where there are workers from all over the world. When people meet me they usually spend a few minutes trying to guess where I'm from. Their guesses are (in order of frequency)- Ireland, Canada, and "not from here".

The funny thing is that my grandparents were Irish and most people assume that I'm from Ireland because of the way I talk.

Sometimes I have trouble speaking - some days I have to concentrate or my speech is all weird and people ask me to to repeat what I said. As a cashier I say the same thing over and over to all of my customers. I don't mind engaging in a short conversation - but there are times I cannot even hear what they are saying to I just smile and nod.

Yes and no I'd say.
On the one hand yes, cause I don't like to speak all the time. If I'm tired, or if I want to tell a longer story, speaking sucks, it really does.
On the other hand, well if I really make an effort, people do understand what I'm trying to tell them.. most of the time at least.
Often people tell me, that they first have to get used to my voice and then it's no problem for them to understand me.
I dunno. All in all I'd say yes and that I prefer signing.

Hah, same thing for me! Except, people usually think I'm from Spain or Austria. Since I'm originally from California but now living in Midwest, when I tell people I'm from California, they just figure my "accent" is Californian. In California, if people ask about my speech, they just ask if I have a lisp or something. I like being in a different part of the country, because I'd rather think of it as an "accent" than a lisp anyway.

Hearing people who laugh at a deaf persons' speech is absolutely cruel. They ought to understand and be grateful for the speech attempt to get something across.

Absolutely! That goes without saying, but unfortunately it still happens from time to time. I'd say mostly among children though. I have not had my speech mocked since high school.

Spent my entire life in Nor Cal. I've never been below Santa Barbara. No plans to, either. Too many crazies!

what i dont get is...[SOME] hearing people force us to take speech classes and then they laugh at our voice. or they exclaim at the fact that i as a 9 year old, could pronounce the word 'ketchup' rather than celebrating that i could fully sign a grade 7 level novel in ASL when i was only 9 years old?

don't they get that we dont have perfect hearing therefore, we won't ever have a perfect voice? forcing us to use our voice makes us sound stupid and below our actual intelligence level.

I haven't had that big of a problem with my speech since elementary school, thanks to speech therapy... but people still do laugh at me when I mispronounce words, mostly my coworkers... I so gotta find a better job lol.

But I have only had one person in my entire life outright say I was hard-of-hearing with only talking to me for 5 minutes, of course she was also part of the disability department at my college lol
