Learning ASL...

Hi all. I posted my introduction in the Newbie place [I'm a regular to lots of forums and I hate it when people just up and post when no one knows who you are, so heads up if you want to hear my "story," it's over there.]

Anyway, I've currently lost 50% of my hearing and my speech is starting to--slur, I guess you would call it?--and so I'm trying to learn ASL. Before now, I've had surgery every two to three years to reconstruct my ear canals, but that alternative is no longer worth the pain and inconvenience. Gradually I will lose more, if not all, of my hearing. I'm 16 and I've spoken and heard my whole life, so it's especially hard to learn to sign so late in the game.

I've read up on the history of the language and the way "sentences" are formed with signs, so I know all the technical stuff...but does anyone know of some good resources for learning ASL?

I haven't read the book yet.. it's not sold in my country so I'm expecting a friend of mine to send the book to me

I have a set of CD Roms called ASL deluxe that are pretty good.

Mes...I am learning ASL as well. A friend of mine was nice enough to give me this link:

It has loads of easy to follow free lessons and I've personally found it to be the best and most solid resource for learning how to sign. It goes through fingerspelling, vocabulary, grammar and sentence construction, all in a conversational and applicable approach.

But I also find that immersion in the culture one is trying to learn is vital, so that's why I'm on here. And I hope I make some good friends on my way!

best to learn ASL faster is go out to social with deafies. Its fast way to learn.

Add ASL resources to your IEP (if you have one) at school. Then the school should provide you with the resources you need to learn ASL.
