ASL Dictionaries

In your view, which is the very best ASL dictionary out there? I am looking for one (price is not object) that has tons of sign words...the most actually.

Thank yoou Calvin. But what I need is a book (portable) that I can take me. One that has almost all the signs known to the language. Can anyone help me find a really good one?

I have that book. It's good for looking up signs by the handshape, and finding out what the English equivalent is. It's also a good source for finding signs for ABC stories.

But it's not a sign "dictionary" if you want a book that lists the English words so you can find the sign.

In Canada - I like the Canadian Dictionary of ASL

for "General" I like the Random House Dictionary of ASL ... the big hardcover version though, not the softcover version

I've yet to find an ASL Dictionary that has Theological Signs in it (the old Religious Signs book is very outdated)

HTH

Yes, it's worthy but it's not going to satisfy your needs for a full dictionary. It's a good book to have in addition to an ASL sign dictionary.

American sign language Dictionary. By Elaine Costello. The lady knows her stuff, she has a phd. The book has 4,500 different signs and tells you along with shows you by arrows how to sign them. Remember though, these kind of books are just vocab not grammar or anything else.

Well it isn't that good that my ASL dictionary is falling apart. You see I have notes written on the margins of the pages.

Coil binding ... if you book is falling apart and you have notes in it ... you could get it coil bound ... or for that matter "rebound".

Of course you could always just by a new one and use the old one for reference ?

P.S Aquablue - you wouldn't even want to knooooow what my booklist so far is this year ... it's just insane !

Thank you Anij. I am looking into it now. I know that Kinko's provides the service. I have just sent them an electronic message.

Happy to help ...
If it's not able to be coil bound ... call up your local library and ask who they have re-bind/recover their books ... this can often be done at a fraction of the price of a new book as well ... just a thought

Coil binding is an excellent way to go. I love coil bound books. They are more open and easier to read. However, if the coiling is not done right when you flip the pages they can get riped or stuck.

Just like the old 'Lays' potato chip commercials - "you can't pick just one"

We have several ASL and D/deaf specific dictionaries.

I probably will expand my library by several more before I say enough, well.. I probably will never say enough Knowledge is Power y'know

Luckily for me Kinko's and Barnes & Nobles are adjacent to one another. I first visited Kinko's and got a price on comb binding. The price was a little higher than a new dictionary so I went next door and purchased a brand new ASL dictionary (the same one). I will try to rewrite all my important notes from my old book onto the new one- as best I can.

I believe Costello has a new unabridged ( which is the version you'll really want) scheduled for release in June of this year.

The concise one is neat ... but the hard cover version (listed with +5600 signs) is actually much better.

The Canadian one we are talking about is also a VERY good resource even if you're living in the USA Canadian Dictionary of ASL This book when first published was about 100$, but has come down in price and is now a steal at 60$ !!!
