My parents are going to let me learn how to sign

I'm so excited. Before my mom would get very angry whenever I brought it up. But the people at the outpatient school I go to told them I really should learn. And they finally said they'd let me take ASL lessons last night. Yay!

Why did you have to have your parents' permission to learn sign language? That's not something you have to have permission for.

Im so happy for you! Im glad your parents have finally come around to 'let' you learn sign. As Vampy said - you shouldnt need your parents permission to learn, and not only that you can use the vast resources of the internet to do so although it is limited as your receptive and conversation skills would limited since it is mostly one way. If you do decide to take the online route I would strongly advise you to get a webcam and ask someone to help you learn through conversation.

Yes, but I learnt sign language when I was a kid anyway. Sneaky me. It sounds like M-M goes to a mainstream school. I went to a deaf oral day school.

I've learned a little on my own, but I'm at the point now that I really need a teacher.

I go to an outpatient program with less than 20 other kids for school...

Congrats !! I still remember when I was finally able to take my first ASL class ( I went to a hearing school, "mainstreamed" without any support, before mainstreaming had a name here. My parents were adamant that I didn't learn any sign because then I'd be "like them" (hey !! what's wrong with us ?)

I , like many of us "oral-onlies-not-by-choice" had managed to sneak a number of "sign language" (a mix of SEE, and ASL) books which I memorized like crazy ... but I couldn't use...
being able to sign up and take my first class felt like I was finally able to breathe !!

My mum eventually came around too and took many classes as well !!

Congrats !!!

Well congrats, but I don't understand why you waited for a permission granted to be able to learn ASL, it's your life that your going to live not theirs... Do what going to help you in life...

Often it's not as easy as just as that .... my parents were adamant that I NOT learn sign ... they certainly wouldn't allow me to socialise with other hoh/Deaf people .. and allowing me to attend hoh/Deaf events or ASL classes was VERY out of the question.

It was different once I moved out ... I could do whatever I wanted - including learning ASL - but while I was under my parents roof ... they expected me to be fully oral ( that included not allowing me to use CC, or offering to get me an amplified phone or TTY)

Like it or not ... Parents have alot of say in the kind of access we are allowed to Deaf Culture, and ASL .... or at least that has been my experience.
