There's been a lot of attention to a new kind of sign language.

People Sign Language by Melissa Regas.

This has sparked a lot of hate mail and death threats from the ASL extremists who misundsrstand it's intended to replace ASL. I dont see it that way. I dont see it as a language to replace ASL . I see it as a language that could be understandable by the global deaf community like Esperanto.

WOW.. I am no expert but I never equated the position of the sign in relation to the body as having anything to do with social status. This sounds like an insecure female to me.

Seriously, does anyone know the origin of the placement of signs in ASL and did they in fact imply social status?

Ignorance? Boredom? I've seen more proficient signers than she, that's for sure.

I know that in my case I know it because when I was learning sign language, I would often ask "why is that the sign?" Sometimes there was an answer, sometimes there wasn't--but such is the case in all languages.

manhole = personhole (sounds nasty)

history = herstory

spokesman = spokesperson

man hours = person hours

. . . and heaven forbid a man holds open the door for one of them!

Exactly. Attributing social status to the signs is something that has occured when hearing people unfamiliar with Deaf culture and etiology of individual signs try to compile dictionaries and teach that with which they have insufficient knowledge. I did a paper on jsut this subject as an undergraduate.

There are already a lot of changes made through ASL to equalize roles.

I've been part of various organizations and some of them have "Chairperson" or "Sportsperson", etc.
