If you mean the X was stroked outward from under the chin, then it probably is "metal".

Look up "metal" on aslpro.com and see if that matches what you saw.

No it was'nt metal. It was just like metal but the X finger was actually rubbing the chin, not under the chin. I know i should have asked her at the time silly me, but i was running late. The last words/sign i gave her was "thank you" and as i was leaving she signed this X on chin ??

True. Sometimes a gesture is just a gesture, not a sign.

Yeah, that's what throws me. I was thinking about "cool" but that isn't on the chin, and it doesn't "rub". I also thought about "sex" but that's not really on the chin, and it doesn't rub. Most of the signs I could think about "tap" or "twist" on the chin area but they don't "rub".

There's also "dry" that drags across the chin.

But none of these seem to fit the context of the conversation. None of those signs seem to be appropriate responses to "thank you".

Could it be the librarian's name sign?

Thanks all for your suggestions. I think now back to the confersation i had with her and now i think eather she started to say "thanks" and spasmed to a stop becouse i was turning or she was just rubbing her chin . I was thinking of the word "cool" to but here the "cool" sign is a variation of the "fine" sign with a wiggle of fingers. Who knows??? I'm also blind in my left eye as well as deaf so i miss alot when i don't slow down and concentrate. Really should have just slooooowed down and just asked her .
all for your kind help. I love this place!

Depend where you are..
There are different meaning for 'x' on chin..
East side called it as Pretend. (only on the chin with 'x')
Hope you find what it is.
