past tense in asl

Hi everyone,

I'm taking a class on sign language and am kind of stumped on a question, I hope you don't mind helping me out

Here's it is:

Inflecting verbs in ASL:
ASK, BOTHER, CRITICIZE, FLATTER, GIVE, HATE, HELP, IMITATE, INFORM, KILL, LOOK-AT, OWE, PAY, PITY, SEND, SHOOT, SHOW, TEACH, TEASE
Non-Inflecting verbs in ASL:
KNOW, LIKE, LOVE, WANT

Given the above lists of inflecting and non-inflecting verbs in ASL, how many signs would it take to express the meaning of the English sentence below?

He flattered me.

I'm thinking the answer is 2, but apparently that's wrong, and I'm not sure why?

Wouldn't it be the perfective sign, then the sign for flattered pointing towards the signer?
