dexterity, or lack thereof

I have some problems with dexterity.

1. I have a hard time getting my fingers into the "R" handshape. Once in class I used the other hand to move the middle finger over into position when fingerspelling. It got a laugh from the teacher, but I'd like to be able to do better.

2. My left hand has major problems with ring finger/little finger independence. I can't make a good ILY handshape with the left hand; my left-hand "airplane" classifier needs to go into the hangar for maintenance.

Are there exercises to improve finger independence? (I want to improve, but I don't want to end up like Schumann, who killed off his piano career by using a weight device that was supposed to help his little finger!)
