Ok so I know that someone is supposed to give me a name sign but no one else that I know is familiar with ASL. Do I just wait for someone to give me one or what can I do?

If you don't know anyone else who is familiar with ASL, why would you need a sign name?

<Thumbs up!> :ty:

Even though I took ASL 1-5 and had Deaf friends (going back 20+ years) I wasn't give a name sign until quite recently. Of course when your name is "Dan" fingerspelling it is pretty quick and easy :)

To answer your question you have to just wait until you work or become friends with someone who is deaf and they just give you a name sign or you ask them for one.

There are cultural guidelines that are involved with name signs.

I agree, even I can give her a sign language through this forum, it is UP to her to like it or not.

Hey Jazmyn, do you like this name sign I created for you ?

Sometimes its fun to give a sign name. I give a hearing girl I went to high school with a sign name years ago she had ummm fake "assets" and I told her the signs milk and shake was her sign name :laugh2:

Yes, they're only useful if they'll be used. Funny side note, a friend I work with who is HOH had her husband or someone who knew little ASL Give her a sign name (her name started with an L and she was a proud mother) but the sign name happened to be the politically 'correct' sign for Lesbian. So I hooked her up with one that was true to her.

:laugh2: I can't say I'm not guilty when being pestered of giving out a terrible name sign.... you were generous... I gave out "douchebag" ... :ugh:

You don't always need to work with someone who's deaf or anything like that to find a name sign. I was born deaf in an all hearing family. My mom actually picked out my name sign.(she interprets for a school)

She is hearing whether she is an interpreter or not, she should not give you name sign. The Deaf should give you the name sign, not your mom. But if you like her name sign for you, then hopefully the Deaf would follow you the way you sign your name.

The reason I said why your mother who is hearing should not sign your name is because Deaf people can see you as you are as a individual person and will give you the right sign name that fit your personality. That is the way Deaf Culture is suppose to be.

with others that sign as stated deaf will give you a name that fits you

My mom is hearing and my dad is deaf. They met each other in high school. If you ask me, I'd say hearing/deaf relationships can work out pretty well.

You gotta be kidding me , do you mean to tell me there is a rule that say only a deaf person can give out a sign name??? That person does not need any one permission to use the sign name her mother gave her. That sound more like a deaf cult to me more than anything , where people have to listen the leader's rules.

If you like your sign name , keep it and don't let anyone tell you can't use.

So if my ASL teacher (who is deaf) gave me a name sign can i use it in the deaf community?

it more descriptive thing..i wear thick framed dark specs so black spec's is me but only with other deaf.
