ASL Course Name

Hey I was excited to see "American Sign Language" listed in a local university course catalog Continuing Education section- as part of "World Languages" with things like German and Mandarin. As opposed to "Communication Disorders" or "Special Education"

Oh thats great. My college buddy works at college as a ASL teacher. There have listed as a special education. My friend tried to work with the administration for changing it. ugh..

I hate the word "Special Education".

Yeah, most colleges would put ASL as foreign language to hearing students.

I'm currently in the sign language interpreter program and my college just classifies it as an applied science career program.

In our school, it's... hrm, is it its own category? Ours doesn't sort by anything other than the "call numbers" (the first four pieces of course info like SPCE or JAPA or SNLN), and the ASL is all in one course category by itself. But on the other hand, it's not afforded the same treatment as the other languages like German and stuff as you can't test out of it (maybe that's just because they don't have some sort of standardized test? one of the spoken languages doesn't do test outs for that reason) and most students who take it are Deaf Ed majors or minors (and all students in 3 and 4 are as it's taught at ISD and not at the college).

In other news, though, I think ASL Club was under either cultural orgs or ed orgs (that's all educational orgs, not just sped) in the campus guide. But I don't remember.

At my HS (the first one, anyway), ASL was a world language and had its classroom housed in the "languages wing" (an o-shaped hallway with about 8-12 rooms or so in it).
