Hi, I'm an ASL 3 student (HH) and it's required in my class to have at least 5 hours of ASL with a Deaf person, max 1 hour per person.

I don't have anything to compensate with, but I don't bite. I don't need to pass for interpreter, but I would like to converse a lot better.

I have a vocabulary limited to basic conversation, complaints, sports, relationships, and food; and expanding my vocabulary is certainly welcome. I can FS at about 170bpm and understand 200bpm. Plus, I'm interesting.

Please let me know if you are interested in Skyping with me, any amount of time donated would be great for me. 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour. Any is fine.

Sunday the 18th or Monday would be great, at any time.

I also have Purple VRS on my phone, though I've never used it.

San Diego has got to have a huge Deaf community, why choose Skype and AllDeaf to get your 5 hours?

Personally, I can't stand video chat; the frame rate can be so unpredictable and choppy sometimes that it makes it hard to understand my Deaf friends. I much prefer going to a Deaf meetup.

Also, it seems odd that by ASL 3 your teachers haven't introduced you to the Deaf community in the area, or at least given resources so you can meet them in person.

are you hearing? then how in the heck did you get purple on your phone? Do you already have purple account activated?

The app is free in app stores, I believe, so theoretically one could download it even if it's then impossible to use.

Is it too impossible for a hearing person to get purple activated? I guess vrs is totally out of the question then, since I'm hard of hearing.

I have no idea, I was just stating it was possible to download an app and then not have an account for the thing in the app.

This is why most people who are in ASL learning usually use Skype. :P Even though Skype is usually terrible... :ugh:

No, a hard-of-hearing person can use VRS, but you have to apply for an account before you use the service.

I know anyone can download, but to say you are hearing and you have p3 ready just irks me. Right now i hear that there is z5h for hearing to be able to make p2p. So... who knows what future will bring.

This was all very interesting, but I'm still left wondering why the OP doesn't actually engage the local Deaf community face to face? Why solicit AllDeaf.com people to interact via Purple or Skype instead of getting to know locals?

Gobae.... we all ask that very same question every single day here.... believe me... Most of us wonder the exact same thing.... :dizzy:

Oh really? That is for ASL users, so how did you get it?
