I haven't been out socially since my dramatic hearing loss and have only recently started ASL. I slow and use a combo of ASL and finger spelling. Does this frustrate ASL users because I want to go to a Deaf super bowl party. But don't want to be embarrassed.

Most people may had been drinking some and will just think you been drinking too and that is why you're slow.

I am just learning and I also use a combination of signing and fingers spelling with my cousin. She understands and knows that I am just learning, so she doesn't at all mind it. I really do love that she is so patient with me and she also wants to help me learn.

I was once signing my name to a little girl that was deaf and she was very patient with me. The girl was about 10 yo or younger and been signing all her life and I was very slow. I thought that was very nice of the girl to wait for me to spell my name . Her mother learned ASL when she was younger and then she got married and had a baby girl that was born deaf . So the baby learned ASL right away. The mother was so glad she had learned ASL so she could teach her child.

I'm also nervous about getting out there, but classes and studying only get us so far! I'm working on getting up the courage to get out there and make friends.
