Talking Deafies... how often do you talk??

I was wondering, those who can talk, and are deaf/Deaf,
how often do you use your verbal skills?
Daily? weekly? monthly?

Always... Rarely do I sign, as I'm not around manual Deaf very much. However, I do use interpreters for the store meetings.

So far no reason to stop talking every day- even though I am bilateral DEAF. aside: I do have a Cochlear Implant.

Thank you for your reply, guys.
I was hoping for more, though - particularly from those who participated
in the other thread "Who's talking Deafie"?

The reason I am asking, I am curious how often is this skill used after all
since so many is opposed to speech therapy- so I hope you understand my curiosity,
that what happens once you do learn to talk - if you guys yourself find it useful or not?

I grew up "oral hearing impaired." I didn't think of myself as deaf, and when I once asked a HI teacher if I was deaf, I was told that I was not. So I just did what was expected of me. Oral only, no sign language taught in my program, and speech training every day in grade school, with the mirror.

So given that context, I didn't exactly have a choice but to use verbal skills every day. I didn't have a problem with the use of verbal skills. I could talk to people one-on-one in quiet places. I got by. And I still use it every day, because it's my number-one communication tool at this point. One uses what one has.

What wasn't fun was being left out of group activities at school, in the family, among groups of friends, etc.

Talking when Deaf

I used to talk everyday then just last January 2012 decided I would stop talking and make everyone write as well as read what I write on pad. I feel much better cuz don't have to struggle and repeat so often. Plus its fun to see that people don't know how to write anymore or feel clumsy writing. More power to writing!

Yes, indeed....I talk every day from the time I wake up until I go to bed. And will never stop talking. Luckily, my boys know ASL and at times have to use it for certain words/phrases....Those who are late-deafened do have somewhat of an advantage, tho'.....And I was encouraged by a very special English teacher to never stop talking, or I would "forget how."....And I'm glad that I heeded those words of wisdom.

And whenever I do encounter hearies that know some ASL, it brings a smile to my face and a "thank you" to them. It makes communication between us more easy and less stressful.

I was never in "speech therapy" since becoming bilateral DEAF-December 20, 2006, It was never suggested by St Michaels/Toronto ENT Clinic that I should.

I rarely talk... Refused to use my voice for a long time, maybe 7 or 8 years. Then I started taking up speech therapy again recently. I wanted to be better able to communicate with my hearing friends as well as increase my odds for a job. But now that I graduated, I am no longer surrounded by hearing people other than my family - who happens to sign quite well. So I haven't had any excuse to use my voice lately. If anyone is wondering why I stopped speech therapy again, well it's because I graduated and am in the process of job hunting. There are no job opportunities in my area, so I will have to relocate for 100% sure. I am kind of in limbo right now. When I DO find a job and relocate, then I will look for services in that area since I will be staying there for a while.

I talk everyday, ever since my parents put me in speech therapy they could NOT shut me up But i use sign with my mom and my deaf friends, boyfriend and interpreter. My boyfriend can talk, but he doesn't talk as much, he signs more than talking.

whenever i don't understand something in a noisy restaurant, i'll just sign to my parents. But really when i'm at home, i'm mainly oral.

Almost never. I'm late deafened, having lost 100% of my hearing last year. While I obviously know how to talk (since I was doing it before I went deaf), I basically choose not to because I hate not knowing what I sound like, and I, like so many other people on this site think that I'm faking it because I (from what I'm told) still speak quite well. So I've basically gone voice off, and rely on pad/paper, texting, and lip reading. It's a deaf adjustment, but it just feels right for me.

Ahh...I cannot communicate on the phone, only VP or TTY....I've been profound, 100% deaf for 51 years, since I was 14 years old.....multiple surgeries also (infections and Cholesteatoma)....

As for having "verbal diarrhea"....nah!...I like my quiet times too.

And why was my English teacher "clueless?"....She was a really sweet and good old lady who was in her late 60's when I was 14 years old!.....she was loved and respected by all at NCSD....we cried when she pased...

Dunno what your "target" is or the reason for it....and if you've got any other names to call me...just send it via PM....no need for all this insulting on this Board!...Otherwise, it will be reported (as it should be since this is not the first time)....
Thank You,
rockin'robin

Wirelessly posted

I make one exception - I use my voice only when my hearing children need a 'Mum-talk' about life issues that maybe concerning them and they need my advice and/or my hearing husband needs to hear my serious opinion on something. I recognize that my hearing family do have that inner need to hear my voice. Even though I am going 'cold turkey' with being voice-off doesn't mean I'm completely heart-less :-)

I don't use my voice that often. The only time I will use my voice is when I talk to some of my family members that doesn't know sign language or whenever I'm not in the mood to write down with a pen or paper whenever I order food off the menu at a restaurant. Otherwise, it's voice off and I feel at ease/natural when I use ASL.

I've found that the voice sounds more normal without wearing hearing aids, so I wouldn't worry about it. But then, I'm a guy and prefer it to sound deeper.

This is a similar route I take also. If the background noise is reasonable, I talk, otherwise, depending on whether the other knows sign or not, we use various alternatives.
