Russia beefs up military assets in Syria in response to Turkey’s downing of jet

Russia ramped up the threat of a military confrontation between Turkey and Moscow Wednesday – a day after a Russian warplane was shot down by Turkey – by announcing that a state-of-the-art air defense missile system will be deployed at a Russian air base in Syria and that all its bombers will now be escorted by fighter jets on their missions.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday that the Russian missile cruiser Moskva already has moved closer to shore to protect the Russian aircraft flying missions near Syria’s border with Turkey with its long-range Fort air defense system.

Shoigu added that his ministry has severed all contacts with the Turkish military. . .

Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber Tuesday, saying it crossed into its airspace from Syria despite repeated warnings. One of its two pilots was killed by militants after bailing out, while his crewmate was rescued by Syrian Army commandos and delivered in good condition to the Russian base.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Russian plane remained in Syria’s skies when it was shot down. He described Turkey’s action as a “crime” and a “stab in the back,” warning of serious consequences….

Turkey says they warned the Russian pilot 10 times before firing on him but the pilot said he never got any warning. On TV they played the recording of the warning to the Russian pilot (it was in English). :dunno:

Really ?? Turkey gave Russian pilots warnings in English ?? Then that could a good as getting no warnings.

Actually, all pilots are to suppose know English all over the world. To prevent language problems with pilots and air controllers, they made English official language for that which makes sense that they would give warning in English.

English is a standard requirement for pilots and air traffic control.

Yeah but this was Russian pilots and the warning should had been given in Russian too if they didn't response to the warnings in English . That should had been a clue they didn't understand English . But we'll
really never know what really happen. But this is not good. :(

That is why they made English the standard language of pilots. To avoid language problems like this.

Pilots are to have basic knowledge of English regardless where they are from. If they fly airplanes or are speaking to pilots, English language are to be known and used.

I agree but we really have no idea what happen with the Russian plane. I guess I feel the way I do b/c my dad was Russian.

All international pilots are supposed to know the common flight terms in English.

No one can expect the other pilots and controllers to know every language. Maybe the Turkish controllers don't know Russian.

Pilots who don't know English are restricted to flying in airspace in their own language areas.

I was saying my dad family was from Russia and this could be why I am on their side this time . I understand what you're saying but I still going to stick up for the Russian side.

With close allies like turkey.....
Who needs enemies...

Turkey's always been a burr in the side of NATO.

When I was with Naval Control of Shipping Command, we could board any NATO country merchant ship in our ports except ones under Turkey's flag. They never cooperated.
