Here’s What It Actually Means

There have been many kinds of meaningless tattoos people have adorned themselves with over recent years. Whether it be African tribal bands, random Chinese characters or even just stars, there is no shortage of meaningless ink being shed across this great nation.

However, if you see someone with a semicolon tattoo, you should know that it actually means something quite different. Instead of just random body decoration, the semicolon actually has a deep and meaningful symbolism.

The semicolon tattoo trend was started by Amy Bluel. When she lost her father to suicide in 2013, the Green Bay, Wisc., resident decided she wanted to raise awareness about suicide and mental health.

Bluel started Project Semicolon, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness of, and helping those affected by, “addiction, depression, self-harm, and suicide.”

As an outward symbol of support, Project Semicolon encourages followers to get a semicolon either tattooed or drawn in pen on their body.

The semicolon was chosen because, among all of the punctuation marks, it represents a continuation.

“A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life,” the group explains on its website (H/T IJReview).

Project Semicolon is also faith-based; in a statement on the group’s website, Bluel says, “When the foundation of this project was created those involved reflected on what got them to where they are today. The answer was clear that it was the love of Christ.

“As we set forth in the project, we committed to loving with a Christ-like love those who are struggling. We inspire others through the very thing that brought us to continuance in our own stories.

“This by no means excludes any other beliefs or religions, as we accept them all. For we are all in this together. I ask you stick around with us for this journey. We might surprise you in the end with the outcome.”

So, next time you see someone with a semicolon tattoo, understand that it’s a statement of something greater than just body decoration. Hopefully, some of these tattoos can start a discourse about mental health.
