What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?

No kidding. Several hearing people at my work do not get it about deaf people. I got applauded for writing explicit lesson plans and my boss said that she wants to use one of mine as a model to show others how to properly write them. My co-teacher heard people talking saying that I must have gotten help to write my lesson plans because deaf people cant write that good.

Wow...people are so STUPID.

You know when that will change? The day your boss has you give staff in-service workshops with you writing furiously away on the blackboard! Teach 25 people something all in one fell swoop!!

about what you wrote in your post, Shel, about that ignorant and stupid comment-

Idiots!! I know some Deaf people write far better than hearing people. Hello?? Stupid people!!

Inspiration PORN. Look at Tina and Paul's singalong, for example. That peeves me the most.

She wanted ME to change phones. And, as I said in my post, I kept telling her I was having trouble understanding her. Yes, I told her I have hearing difficulties.

I really hate to tell a person over the phone I am HOH b/c I know they'll start yelling at me. If I ask them to talk slower they'll yell instead . WTF! I will have tell the person 3 times or more I DID NOT ask you to talk louder, I said "slower " but they do not get it. I tried to explain that I can hear them just fine but I CAN'T understand you. I sometime have to wait for my daughter to come over and made the call for me if I can wait that long. I really hate making phone calls to businesses.

Yea that would show them. Honestly as long as my boss gives me credit, I am good but just wow! Most of my co-workers are very very limited anyway.

I totally understand this. I grew up with people saying "Never mind", "You don't listen!" and my personal favorite, "Are you deaf?"

The saddest part of it was that it mostly came from my family members. I didn't know how to react because it was a type of taboo topic until I got out of high school and started advocating for myself more. I don't know much ASL or about the Deaf culture (somewhat of a introvert, so making new friends is difficult for me).

I learned that having hearing loss is just another part of me. I have a sick sense of humor and I just tell people because my brain doesn't pick up on certain continents, it twists the words and where my humor comes from! ;)

I work at an arts and crafts store.

Customer: *mumbles*
Me: I'm sorry, sir, can you speak up? I have issues hearing with all the noise here.
Customer: Oh! I'm so sorry! You're hearing impaired? Do you know Braille?
Me: *atomic facepalm*

LOL!!! that's REALLY FUNNY I WISH THAT WAS CAPTURED ON VIDEO !!!:laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

I've been reading the forum for a while now and for the longest time, I thought I was alone. While some of the things people say and do may seem funny in print, they can get really irritating! It's nice to know there's a community out there!

I'm LD, so I can speak well. Although, the auditory feedback loop is important to speech and it affects my speech. Since my speech is not quite right, most hearing people think I have an accent and ask me what country I'm from.

Annoying Things Hearing People Do to Deaf People

What are things hearies do to deafies? Have you guys dealt with annoying, ignorant hearing people?

I have, a few times. When I explain about my deafness, they yell at me or "test" my hearing by covering their mouths and saying something then asking me what they said. Or they say that they know sign language then they give the middle finger. Rude questions such as "can deaf people drive?". Also comments like "you don't sound like you're deaf".

Things are better now, but every now and then, there are those annoying, ignorant hearies.:roll:

Actually we have two very long threads on this.

I tend to lose control and get very angry when I think about it so will leave this to anyone else who wants to rehash the issue.
