MAINZ, Germany — Dozens of Holocaust survivors and their relatives from around the world are expected to converge on a German courtroom Tuesday as the so-called "accountant of Auschwitz" is due to go on trial.

Former concentration camp bookkeeper and guard Oskar Groening, 93, is accused of being an accessory to the murder of at least 300,000 Jews.

"Many of the survivors, who are co-plaintiffs in the trial, are stepping on German soil for the first time since the end of Nazi regime," Christoph Heubner, the executive vice president of the International Auschwitz Committee, told NBC News from Berlin.

A total of 63 Holocaust survivors or their relatives from the United States, Canada, Israel and elsewhere have joined the prosecution as co-plaintiffs in the closely-watched trial. Around 30 are expected in court in Lueneburg.

Groening's trial comes 70 years after the liberation of Adolf Hitler's concentration camps.

He is accused of working as a guard at the Auschwitz death camp between May and June 1944, when some 425,000 Jews from Hungary were brought there and at least 300,000 almost immediately gassed to death. German prosecutors allege that Groening was responsible for dealing with the belongings and money stolen from camp victims, which is why he has often been referred to as "the accountant of Auschwitz" in the German media.

As fugitives age, the case is likely to be one of Germany's last Nazi trials. Authorities say it is intended to be "an important signal for the last remaining survivors of the Holocaust."

But while the proceedings highlight Germany's last push to bring Nazi criminals to justice, critics accuse the country's judicial system of "disastrous failings."

Following the Nuremberg trials in 1949, German authorities for decades had only targeted individuals linked to specific atrocities.

An estimated 6,500 Nazis who worked at SS concentration camps were alive at the end of World War II. However, just 43 men from Hitler's elite SS units faced court afterward.

Nine received life sentences, 20 received prison terms between three and 15 years and 10 were acquitted, according to the Fritz-Bauer-Institute in Frankfurt, a Holocaust research center.

"It is a black stain on Germany's map," Heubner said. "The culprits were welcomed in the midst of society and the general public kept silent. Groening was a wheel in the murder machine of Auschwitz and therefore, also had blood on his hands."

The 2011 prosecution of John Demjanjuk, an autoworker who lived in the U.S. for years after the war and was convicted of 28,060 counts of being an accessory to murder, was a game-changer for the German legal system. The court's ruling that Demjanjuk could be convicted on his service record alone, triggered a search for dozens of suspected Auschwitz guards who were still believed to be living in Germany.

According to the federal office investigating Nazi crimes, there are currently 11 open investigations against former Auschwitz guards, and "charges have been filed in three of those cases including Groening's case," prosecutor Thomas Will told NBC News.

If convicted, Groening could face up to a 15-year prison sentence.

"It is important that Groening stands trial, but the survivors had hoped to see prosecution much earlier," Heubner added.

Try saying that to the survivors and their relatives...won't hold much water I believe.

Yep, the egregiousness, the horror of that time is still too much to overcome and its best used as a reminder.......

My family has forgiven the americans for carpeT bombing our town, 30 thousand dead, in a weekend. most as in allmost all of the dead where civimians, my grandmothers entire.family her young brohers, sisters, all killed.
Now
I could choose to hold some grudge, and sure the americans got away with war crimes.as well as the genocide of natives peoples...lest we forget that successful genocide the nazis wished they did as the americans did...
But
I beieve way for a.future is to forgive and learn from that maddness.
Thats just me though granted..
Anyway

What incident was this?

You are saying that America intentionally bombed civilians with the same coordination as the Nazis who built concentration camps?

the carpet bombing of.foggia..most killed were civilians...obviously considering most people living there were civilians..
But dresden got it far worse
And the nukes of jaoan even killed far more in seconds...
Its nof some compitition of suffering with me..the natives got genocide the americsns got away with it. The nazi tried, and they didnt...
Ok
Im just keeping t real..as for death camps the brits were good at those too..the nazi even got the idea from them.
lest we all forget here the first people the nazi targetted after gaining power wasnt the jews it was us DEAF..
Anyway
I think now 70 years on forgivness is a better option. I dont believe in americans should pay slave reperation for those crimes either for what its worth..

That's the problem, forgiveness doesn't make anyone learn.

Thats fair.
But given the years that have past, it csn certainly show we as a civilization as in the western world are over inflicting such atrocities on eachother and others...
I understand. Its a pipe dream...
But its a good one i think..

Sure but its not a numbef game is it?
We dont have a hierachy of genocide do we?
How many natives did you yanks kill? For your manifest destiny?
I get it i do, you got away with it the nazi didnt, victors write the history..i get it...i do...if the germans would of done it 70 ywars before or what ever they most likely woukd of suceeded, the yanks were conquering natives in the 187Os and 1880s..
and dont claim that genocide is different, actually im wrong it is.
You guys got away with it..
Just keeping it real.....
i think for this old guy...foegivness would show something very stupendous for the west...oic...
Hang em high.....
Mmmmmmmmmmm

Say... Do you think Chinese people would forgive Japanese for their atrocities in 1930's and 1940's? Of course it's the past but it's never forgotten.

I agree. Its never forgotten, nor should it be.
But forgivness helps stop the cycle..
the longer it gets in the past the easier forgivness will become, i hope...
There. Not many of these old school nazi left..
This guy prob is one.of the last..
I think it woukd be great if the last one is left Alive and forgiven...thats something the nazi wouLd never have allowed his enemies..if he won.

Isnt there a thread about this?
My opinion is to forgive, itS beeN 70 years. forgivness will heal more.then retribution...
It Understand few hold this.opinion...
Cool.

Mod's note:

Thread merged.

have the Jews ever forgiven the Italian government for participating in the Holocaust? I seem to recall Benito Mussolini passing some racist laws under his fascist regime.

You should be thanking Americans for giving you your government back. Americans did not want to get involved in the war - we were attacked. You shouldn't side with people who attack America.

Speaking of holding grudges .. what exactly does the United States have to do with the story in the OP? This man is being tried by the German Government. Perhaps you should be telling the Germans to just let it go? We kicked fascist racists in the groin, and lobotomized them in WWII and would be happy to do it again.

Thats a very simplistic take on history..your welcome to hold it...no plm
I would prefer forgivness in this case..its just an opinion..a minority one fine.
What america has to do with this perticular case is well ive been discussing this on here with americans, and americs of course got away with genncide. The nazi didnt..its like a theif lecuturing another theif not to steal....nice...whwt worked for yoir nation, conquest and genocide of natives, the nazi also wanted to do and tried to do, its a good thing theu lost, but it doesnt negate your own nations genocide on others...or to put it this way. Just because your nation.got away with the crimes, of genocide, doesnt mean.the crimes didnt occure....
This man is being tried as we all know not because of the genocide, its because the nazis lost...
As for americs getting into the war...sure a couple of years after the fighting started, and the jews and others bejng murdered by the nazis wasnt part of the equatiin of american involment...as for italy siding with japan re the attacks...im mot sure if italy even knew.abouT the attack on pearl harbour, but some americans did...and let it happen anyway...
I dont know if the jews have forgiven italy...i know isreal has. I also know isreal awarded a fransiscan its top civiloan honor for saving jews during thst madness....
Italy and isreal have diplomatic relations...so on.
Yes im thankfull the allies along with mafia were able to get the fascists out....
But i wont ignpre the cost of doing that

Germany may be trying to 'clean up' their past by bringing this monster to trial. Of course nothing can undo the horror of the Holocaust .
