For younger terps starting out, there are more possibilities, especially if they're interested in VRS or traveling.

I'll continue interpreting for church and if something pops up but I'm not going to depend on it for a full-time career.

even around here, it's still very difficult. I've had several terp friends who ended up pursuing entirely different careers so I told aspiring terps that in order to increase their chance with more reliable source of income, they should also pursue a speciality field such as legal, medical, etc.

We do need more legal specialists. I had to turn down an out-of-town legal assignment this week from a company that was searching over a wide area.

It seems that a LOT of the terps I know are no longer doing work in colleges and universities because they now work at Sorenson and other VRS companies. I think it it is perceived to be more steady income. They go to work at the same place every day instead of being assigned to various campuses in their area of work. But some are not interested in doing that and enjoy the change of scenery.
