Two U.S. troops killed amid Afghan protests over Koran burning

February 23, 2012|By Laura King, Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan — On a day when President Obama personally apologized for the burning of Korans at an American-run military base, violence over the incident escalated ominously with the killing of two American troops by an Afghan army soldier during a demonstration in eastern Afghanistan.

At least 13 people have been reported killed in unrest that broke out after Afghan laborers at the Bagram air base discovered late Monday that discarded Korans were being disposed of in the incinerator used to burn trash.

The fury appeared unabated despite the apology from Obama, reported Thursday by Afghan President Hamid Karzai's office. The presidential palace said a letter received from the U.S. president conveyed deep regret and offered assurances that "the error was inadvertent" and that those responsible would be held accountable....

2 US Troops Shot in Kabul; NATO Pulls Workers

KABUL, Afghanistan

A gunman killed two American military advisers with shots to the back of the head Saturday inside a heavily guarded ministry building, and NATO ordered military workers out of Afghan ministries as protests raged for a fifth day over the burning of copies of the Quran at a U.S. army base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Interior Ministry attack, saying it was retaliation for the Quran burnings, after the U.S. servicemen — a lieutenant colonel and a major — were found dead on the floor of an office that only people who know a numerical combination can get into, Afghan and Western officials said.

The top commander of U.S. and NATO forces recalled all international military personnel from the ministries, an unprecedented action in the decade-long war that highlights the growing friction between Afghans and their foreign partners at a critical juncture in the war.

The U.S.-led coalition is trying to mentor and strengthen Afghan security forces so they can lead the fight against the Taliban and foreign troops can go home. That mission, however, requires a measure of trust at a time when anti-Western sentiment is at an all-time high.

Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak called U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to apologize for the shooting and offer his condolences, Pentagon press secretary George Little said in a statement released in Washington.

"This act is unacceptable and the United States condemns it in the strongest possible terms," Little said.

Security is tight in the capital, which is covered in snow, and foreigners working at the U.S. Embassy and at international organizations have been banned from leaving their compounds.

U.S. officials said they were searching for the assailant, who has not been identified by name or nationality.

The two American service members were found by another foreigner who went into the room, according to the Afghan official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose details about the shootings. They were shot in the back of the head, according to Western officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information. Authorities were poring over security camera video for clues, the Afghan official said....

7 US troops wounded in Afghanistan, as protests against Koran burnings continue

Published February 26, 2012 | FoxNews.com

Demonstrators protesting against the burnings of Korans at a U.S. base in Afghanistan tossed grenades at an American base Sunday in a sixth consecutive day of violence that left seven US troops wounded and two Afghans dead.

Afghan authorities also identified and launched a manhunt for a suspect in the killing of two U.S military advisers -- a lieutenant colonel and a major -- inside an Afghan ministry on Saturday.

The attacks were the latest in six days of violence across the country by Afghans furious at the way some Korans at an American base outside of Kabul were disposed of in a burn pit....

Time to get the hell out of Dodge. Why are we still there? Let the animals tear each other apart.

And we shouldn't have apologized either! How about an apology for killing our troops?:thumbd:

It was the honorable thing to do. They're still going to kill our troops whether we apologize or not.

I can't believe the burning of the Koran was allowed to happen! What was the point of us trying to win Afghanistan thrust if our troops are going to allow the burning of the Koran to happen , we know how the Afghanistan feel about their bibles and how they will uses any excuse to kill American. If we don't understand Afghanistan culture by now we have no businesses being there!

An apology is wasted on people who cannot be reasoned with.

Where is the mass condemnation from "peaceful" muslims over the murder of innocent civilians? Why is there silence over the bombing of a NATO base? The willful murder of US soldiers in the name of Islam?

Islam is becoming associated with death and destruction and the "peaceful" muslims say nothing about it.

same for us.

the question is - why isn't our news showing it? :hmm:

and... in case you didn't know - Talibans did it, not Muslims. and President Hamid Karzai has already called for peace and calm.

I think that the story is not quite right. There must be something else going on that we don't really know because of media censorship.

why not? do you agree that our American troops shouldn't be burning Koran?

what for? they're enemies and terrorists. enemies don't apologize to each other.

I think what I read said that they were not burned on purpose as in protest. Read your second line and remember what you said that I put in bold!

same for us.

What religious group do you think the Taliban belong to? They are Muslim!

What religious group do you think the Taliban belong to? They are Muslim!

and what religious group do you think KKK, Westboro Baptist Church and Army of God belong to? They're Christians!

ridiculous point you're making.

Talibans are Islamic Fundamentalists that believe in archaic interpretation of Sharia law. dozens of Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia have already denounced them and they have mosques to guide them away from evil groups because what Taliban doing is against Islamic teaching.

And that is why allowing the burning of the Korans to happen was the most careless mistake to happen! We know what happen when Korans are destroyed by Americans , it going to cost people lives. It's liked we poked a hole in a hornets nest and the whole hive is angry. How could such a stupid and dangerous thing be allowed to happen! I hope there is an investigation into how the Korans got burned so it will not happen again. I could care less about the Korans , I just do not want to see our people killed over a some bibles.

Using your logic, all Christians should be condemned because of a few mentally deranged Christian leaders and churches.

:)
:D

Actually, there are far more Christians who condemn the mentally unstable fringe groups of Christianity than you will ever see coming from any other group.

But .....you wouldn't have mentioned that.

Just like you're not mentioning the millions of peace-abiding Moslem who condemn the Taliban.

Not true. There are a few Muslims where I worked yesterday and they discussed it. They are concerned they will get blamed, and it looks like they are correct. :(
