Woman hit in head by foul ball behind home plate at Pirates game (WARNING: DISTURBING VIDEO)

In a scary scene during the second inning of Monday’s game between the Pirates and Cubs at PNC Field, a woman was hit in the back of the head with a foul ball, causing a delay of game for 23 minutes.

The fan was standing in the first row behind home plate with her back turned to the action when Starlin Castro fouled a ball back into the netting. The woman must have been standing too close to the net as the ball flew into it while hitting her square in the head.

The woman immediately collapsed and the game was delayed before paramedics escorted her out of the stadium on a stretcher.

Reports indicate the woman was conscious and a friend next to her gave the crowd a thumbs up.

Wow, that was nasty and I think she's very lucky. Hmmm, maybe put a bit more tension on that netting? I tried to see if her head was touching or an inch or so from then net but to no avail....

WOW that was awful. They definietly need to put up a stronger netting to prevent this from happening again. I'm glad she is doing ok.

MLB Teams should drop nets and put up chicken wire for backstop. Its safer for fans

Chickenwire is thin. Thats what they used to use at the old NHL games back in 40s and 50s before plexi glass installed

it will rust out...
Joker will come back and say "but all the MLB teams should have dome covered stadiums!"

That's not what baseball is about- baseball is an outdoor sport. Plus if chicken wire is used in the many little league parks etc... it's still going to rust badly.

Then paint chickenwire with this.

It will still break down faster than what they have now.

Everything in life has a risk unfortunately but the $ is what the teams worry about more...

Well Plexi glass will break if a baseball hits it. But Plexi glass stands up strong in NHL games

A puck and a baseball both have high velocity/speed so both would break plexiglass. If I am not mistaken that HAS happened with a hockey puck breaking plexiglass.

Next?

Plexiglass outside and in the sun; those shadows, reflections, etc......don't think so...

They did have a net, according to one report I saw, but the women was not watching what was going on on the field and was standing too close to the net. Whenever you go to a baseball or hockey game you have to pay attention to what is going on because you can get seriously hurt if your unlucky enough to get hit with your inattention.

And Golf and lacrosse too.
