This battle has gone on for 30 years, and the Danns have not given up yet, even though the government has seized hundreds of their cattle, sold the animals at auction, charged the sisters nearly $50,000 in fees and fined them $3 million for willful trespass.

''Trespass? Who the hell gave them the land anyway?'' Mary Dann asked as she mended a fence on a windswept desert morning. ''When I trespass, it's when I wander into Paiute territory.''

There are a lot of articles out there about this battle. It also appears that our government resorts to bullying tactics and dirty tricks every single time this topic comes up.

someone is going to be rich, sitting on it and waiting it out til last survivor.

There are a lot of political with BLM and it is different, depending on philosophies.

Strict conservatives (Tea Party) want full local control for all of BLM's lands.

Moderates want remain BLM control with reasonable on gas/oil drilling, mining and other resources, also sell some of lands that benefit the communities. I believe that BLM's lands are shrinking as more lands goes for urban sprawl in Las Vegas metro.

Liberal want remain BLM control with strict animal conservation, no mining and no gas/oil drilling but unclear about sell the lands, but they dislike sprawl.

The victory will be based on the Congress action and if they change the law that benefit conservative so it is conservative's victory, if they change the law that benefit liberal so it is liberal's victory, but it don't last longer because laws will be change over time.

BLM isn't my priority, but I side with moderate's view on BLM.

There is a lot of exaggeration about problem with BLM that why I don't buy at all.

I don't see it as a political dispute at all. I see it as a historical one. Perhaps even a regional dispute (?).

The only thing I am reminded of is the US Supreme Court granting the Cherokee Nation sovereignty, but President Andrew Jackson forcibly removed them anyway. Wouldn't that have been illegal?

I disagree with you and the problem with BLM is political dispute that where everyone argue about land issues.

If BLM hasn't made on media nor alert by the Congress so there will be no political dispute and no need to change the laws.

Federal government has terrible history about American Indians, but it became past, anyway.

I am not surprise about this at all , it's wrong that government can just take your land away from you ! This happen after my dad dies we had prime land taken by eminent domain ! It had ocean right of way and the state waited for my dad to dies b/c they knew he would had put up a huge fight to keep his land he worked for his whole life. This is criminal when the federal government keep doing to the Native Americans .

Most of eminent domain are local and state that where they take your property for new schools, new roads, government buildings and everything that related to government, including infrastructure. It was original design for eminent domain, but many locals are abusing the eminent domain by taking your property for new shopping center or new wealthy subdivision, or private development.

It is historical about government mistreatment of American Indians, that's unfortunate moves, also history can be painful for all of us.

So, in everyone's opinion, what is the bigger threat? A militia claiming to protect the United States Constitution, or a heavy handed and overbearing Federal Government?

I'm not trying to stir the pot, just curious.

The battle about constitutionality is all up to US Supreme Court.

but it isn't end game because some people disagree with US Supreme Court.

For me, I don't believe that federal government is overburden but they carry a lot of red tape. IMO.

Exactly. The government isn't following the criteria for eminent domain as it was originally designed.

New England is bad for using eminent domain, especially Connecticut.

The house that my great-great grandmother's family had lived in, (her father was a whaling captain), was torn down to make way for a new bridge. I remember when my grandmother drove me past the house to "say good-bye." :(

It doesn't made it feel any better if the land was used for a school , we got cheated big time . We didn't get the full price of our land ,we had to go to court to get what was rightfully our money. The judge rules in our favor but it still was not enough money . We had to pay taxes on this too so it was given in one hand and taken in the other hand! We wanted to hold onto this land b/c we knew it was going to worth a lot more one day.
I am not sure what our land was used for. I bet my dad rolled over in his grave when this happen. One of my g/f father tired to buy the land from dad. Dad refuse to sell it to anyone.

My great grandmother was a full blood Miami Indian. She died a broken hearted woman and an alcoholic (according to what my grandmother told me). So, even though I do not really identify as a Miami Indian, as I understand it, the Miami Tribe identifies with me, because I have their blood in my veins. They consider me a full blood, even if I have a drop of Miami blood in me.

I want to reach out to them, the tribe I mean. I have done some research on my own, but I want to go to their tribal council and introduce myself to them. I want to learn as much as I can, from them, so that my two sons will know a portion of their own history.

Today, the Federal Government recognizes the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma as a sovereign nation. And according to what I am reading about the Shoshone Sisters, that could change very quickly if the Federal Government decided they wanted their land.

I think this is very wrong. In fact, I think it is pure evil. The Miami people were nearly exterminated by the Federal Government. They were slaughtered and butchered by the thousands.

A once proud nation numbering in the 10's of thousands, only approximately 100 adults remained after they were relocated and forced West. My great grandmother would have been born in the years after the forced removal.

Anyways, I just wanted to share that.

That is called genocide what happen to Native Americans and yes is was evil and it's still evil what is happening to them today . My daughter's father had Cherokee on his mother's side and my daughter looks a lot like her grandmother as young woman . I dated a man that was Black and Cherokee and he told me some of the things that was done to the Native American women but I can't post it here.

The situation about Native Indians were from historically conservative government in 1800s but eventually, they apologized to Native Indians and established the Indian reservation.

Some states have issue with Native Indians, such as disagreement on casino or payday loan with ridiculously high interest.

The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was passed by Congress on May 28, 1830 during the Presidency of Andrew Jackson.

He was the President mostly responsible for the genocide of Native Americans. Andrew Jackson was the founder of the modern day Democratic Party.

Marshall had initially opposed Jackson's election to the presidency, and in the Cherokee Indians case, Worcester v. Georgia (1832), Marshall infuriated Jackson by insisting that Georgia laws that purported to seize Cherokee lands on which gold had been found violated federal treaties. Jackson is famous for having responded: "John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it."

Jackson was referring to the Supreme Court Judge that ruled in favor of the Cherokee Nation's Sovereignty. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/supremecourt/antebellum/history2.html
