Question Keep TTY Or Not? Already have VP/Computer

Ok, since my good friend, male, said never have TTY since he now have VP/computer so don't need it for anything except for one thing he forgot!!!! But he is too stubborn for not understand at all.... but seeing what someone from other forum said abt calling to 911 instead of VP!! Which I can understand that but yet my friend don't undy to have to keep that TTY for E.R.!! But gosh...he said he has done called to VRS thru VP and that police arrived in few sceond! But what if it was very big E.R.??? How can u do that to call thru VP like this? Like someone broke in or something like that???? Tell me how??

Maybe u guys can tell me that might be helpful some..... hopefully that my friend is wrong not have TTY cuz he has give it away! Gosh!! I would rather keep that TTY always!

I mean he use email thru computer and for chat thru VP.....but for that large E.R....things could happened differently than what he did call police for simple small thing?? Know I mean..... Do u think we should keep TTY for that reason?

Pls give us some ur input......

Thanks!

I prefer to keep my TTY in case of emergency....
AND I also keep another portable TTY
from Ultratec "Compact" for traveling
for emergency.
I recently got a new Sidekick
which I like to use for traveling, too.

I am thinking about trying this PCTTY
Look at:

My tty is in a box somewhere. No landline phone for me, so no 911 service. I guess we have to save local police and fire numbers on VP for emergencies.

In Australia, we still keep TTY, despite its hardly used, because its good for emergency.

Fire/Police won't accept any SMS text message calls from deaf people. At the moment we want them to recognised it, it will take time.

all of my three ttys (minicom and 2 supercom) are in boxes(original that is) and stored in coat/linen closet since I do not have landline phone. all of my communication is via IM/Email/VP/videochat/vrs/iprelay meh

If I need 911 I run to payphone that is outside of laundry building, (less than 30 sec to get there) and press 911 and wait eh... If during daytime, just the rental office, just a stone throw from here.

ever thought of Nextalk? http://www.nextalk.net/ which you can call to any tty number from your computer using this free software and those tty users can call you on computer if you leave Nextalk running active.

Too bad it's Windows only ... from the looks of it, it wouldn't be too hard to port to OS X or Linux.

I have the VP, Computer and all that but as for the TTY - Yeah I know, It's been collecting dusts on it. However if there's an emergency, I'd use the tty to make a direct call but right now the tty is being in a box. If an emergency occurs - I can go to my neighbor to make a call.

I would keep the TTY in case of emergency... (that if the tty got batteries in it), just incase of power outages.

Oh, I have asked them to port to OS X and I did point to the developer sites where they can look at what is need to import into OS X app and they says they don't have resources to do that. eh..

I have both TTY and VP. I prefer to keep my TTY hooked up in case of an emergency. I have 2 young children at home and I feel safer knowing I can call 911 quick with my TTY if anything happens to my children.

I agree that TTY should be kept. You never know what could happen that you might need it. I think people should think hard before giving it away. I cannot think of logging on to my computer for an emergency. My computer doesn't turn on as fast as having a TTY ready by the phone. There are days that I do not care to be on the computer, so I have the TTY which I still like to use. You never know! That's what I think.

I offered to do a port for a company that made a similar product (used a modem, though, not the web). Was going to do it in exchange for a copy of the software, but I never heard back from them.

That is great of Sorenson to let everyone know why we should keep a TTY!

Several years ago I had to dial 911 from my TTY due to an emergency matter but before I could finish telling the 911 dispatcher what was happening I was cut off but to my relief that they had my home address in their system and they sent cops and EMTs over to my home right away.

You can turn on the captions. It is below the screen where you can turn the captions off or on.

My Deaf friend called my on TTY a few days ago because his computer was not working.

What do you do if you have an emergency and no electricity for the computer?

I don't see closed caption even if it's on. Also, I tried to click in the "View PDF Text" button but nothing happened.

What if you have an emergency inside your house and you can't escape to the neighbor, or the neighbor isn't home?

You are right. I just checked on it and to my surprise there is no cc even when I tried to turn it on
Hopefully Sorenson will fix it soon.

Do you have that? What is it like? I thought it was for short-term only. How long does it stay on?

I can't believe that an alternate way has not yet been devised. I have an old tty, but some of the keys do not work. I don't think it is worth spending hundreds of dollars for something I won't use. Paying monthly phone service when we don't use it seems a waste. Are we going to have to wait a hundred years for some new updated way to call 911? I have to rely on my cell phone for now.

I really think that 911 Call Centers should move over to IP-connected PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) so I don't think you have to have a traditional TTY machine along with your Blackberry or Sidekick.

What good will that do when you can't find out where someone is when they call? IP addresses are not able to identify your geographical location to the precision of "hey, I'm here" unlike telephone numbers.

At least with wireless phones, you can use triangulation and GPS. Until IP technology becomes location specific, you'll find that IP connections to PSAPs will not be forthcoming.
