Youngstown News, Deaf FBI agent Sue Thomas tells her story

Boardman native Sue Thomas will be the guest speaker at the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Dr., Sunday.

Thomas has been deaf since she was 18 months old. It took years with speech therapists to develop her voice and during that process she became an expert lip reader. A graduate of Springfield College in Massachusetts with a degree in Political Science and International Affairs, Thomas was hired by the FBI to work in undercover surveillance reading lips for agents in Washington.

In 2001, Thomas was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and served as Ambassador for the National M.S. Society from 2002-2007. Needing a special service dog trained to work with an individual with multiple disabilities, Thomas traveled to Canada to get her dog, Katie. She has since founded a nonprofit group, Kennels of Levi, to train dogs in the United States. It costs more than $20,000 to breed, raise, train and place each dog.
