Anyone here use linux instead of windows?

I'm a Linux user and I keep wondering why not many people use it. I guess because it's not so popular (got something to do with its marketing team then), and cause' Windows and macOS have been around for ages. Linux does have its advantage over Windows that I found very useful for my daily work, you can read more in this text: https://www.1and1.com/digitalguide/server/know-how/linux-the-cost-effective-alternative-to-windows/
Above all, I use it because most of the software package is free :)

People like to use Win 10 and Mac because it's intuition. One size doesn't fit all. If you're looking for a job, you must have an engineering degree. A bit disclosure- major companies want to hire engineers with "extra" software/computer programming background. They're very desperate...

Well You know MS Windows dominate business world. First MS OS released like around 1985 while Linux released around 1991. Around that time, Linux was very difficult to use and lotta buggy with early 86 processor. So MS won.

The first computer I used as a bookkeeper with a small real estate/construction firm was the Radio Shack Model III. I cannot remember what the OS was; but it was not DOS, Windows or Mac.

I believe you are thinking CP/M OS, soon after that It quickly replace MS-DOS.

I was (and still am) thinking it was their own variant of CP/M but I can't come up with what it was called. We went to their Model IV before getting one of their IBM clones. I continued to use it for payroll even after we went to one of theirs that used DOS. That was because I could make my own changes when things like Social Security rates changed rather than have to have PeachTree send us a disk. I was also often having to enter new deductions for different union dues as we did jobs in different places.

I use Linux only for work, it is more faster and don't need any antivir..

While GENERALLY more safer you still need it as viruses DO exists. Even if it for just cleaning from WIN users from getting them.

I love my Linux system since Linux Mint does ships with quite bit of features and accessibly tools. :)

Bad thinking. People with Macs and Apple products thought that way once upon a time.... until they got hit with viruses. The reason why Macs and Linux flavor machines don't get hit as often is because the payload to the virus creator is a LOT less than if they targeted Windows.

Better safe than sorry when a virus does chew through your machine.

Which is why my have ClamTK installed and scheduled for both scans and updates once daily. As well as often backups just in case something does make it way in. It also the ONLY fight ransomware should it takes haul on your machine.

Did you hear that Microsoft even developed Linux OS called Azure? It's a cloud base Linux system. https://www.extremetech.com/computi...inux-operating-system-for-the-first-time-ever

I tried to use LinuxMint 19 with Xfc on old Purple Dell Mini 1010. It ran fine but not snappy. It can't play Netflix, Youtube is extremely laggy. It's all because of shXXy GMA500 chipset and Atom processor. I reverted back to Windows XP and planned to sell it for $10. It used to have Win 10 installed but it's slow going.

Reason why not many people using Linuxes? Because it's not a real "desktop". Although you can use it as Desktop but it have its weakness on one security issue, anyone can hack into Linux by create new login and access file unless you chose to "encrypt during installiation" which means that Linux encrypts everything during installation so it's locked only to you, it'll become unhackable to anyone.

It be super nice if Microsoft or Apple go under and Linux can reign LOL> Why I love Linux because I can run Live Linux OS of some kind that allows me to boot into desktop without Hdd, SSD or CDrom drive. If any old PC which is 2005 or newer can be used as emergency system without drives except Pendrive (Linux flashed thumb drive). This allows me to access website ect..

There's a TON of Linux flavors floating around out there.. unlike MS and Apple, Linux is generally open source. I know there are some flavors of Linux that has as GUI interface to make it look like a Windows/Apple desktop (Puppy comes to mind- I used that one to get as many pictures off my sister's ASUS before the thing completely died.).

There are a few here who do use Linux. Some threads in the technology sub forums too.

I don't as haven't really gotten into Linux; tend to stick with Windows as it's a little easier with programming applications. Soon to add a Mac laptop if I can find the funds for that and bootcamp! But I did try Linux years ago on my older PC- Knoppix.

I am a ubuntu user as well as a HAM radio operator and am darn good at it i must add!!!!!!! i just turn the volume up on my radio and communicate that way!!!!!!

I have been using Linux for 4years , I’m still loving it no matter how difficult it is to use , because I’m a Laravel Software Developer and this Linux just works what I wanted to do on my projects with shell commands so it’s far better than windows lol

I love Linux and it’s my primary system on my computer , it’s really faster in computing software like apache server / phpmyadmin despite the less compiling/ executing Time this is why I use it for mainly software development in android studio and php etc .

I still use Linux on my computer however I use Windows 10 for work. I have been use Linux at my home for 15 years and no issues with Linux :)

I want to get on board here as a Linux user. Been using Debian since Version 3. No Windows in my house! Well, no Microsoft windows. I do have some of the regular some of the "look out of the" kind.
Jim
Debian is good at keeping it small, it gets a little disorienting for me as I'm used to Redhat flavors. I switched to Mac for my own use at home and work.

Used a lot of ix stuff over the years for school and work. SUSE, Solaris, Debian, Redhat, Ubuntu, BSD. More of our software for work is supported by Redhat than other flavors. With constant flow of upgrades to Linux, their own software, as well as other third-party stuff, they like to limit what they work on and Redhat seems to be most common.

well im positive these people arent too familiar with linux due to CLI to install drivers or softwares so i guess its why they, so i noticed alldeaf website have changed big time. just logged in today since uhh 2012? i think

I mainly use ubuntu on one of my Nintendo switches and really loving it. I have run variety of Linux on my servers and my computers. I have ran freebsd, slackware, red hat, centos, and Ubuntu. I still have my old servers from days of running my own hosting company haha
