I soo hope no one takes this offensively, I'm just asking a serious question. I wouldnt think it would be, but my friend thought it was rude...

I'm a hearing teen who is super interested in ASL and trying to meet all kinds of people. I kind of feel weird for liking a deaf guy, or being interested in dating one. I'm not exclusively looking for a deaf of H.O.H. guy to be friends with or date, I just think it might be interesting to experience different ways of communicating with a friend or date and I've heard a few deaf men say that they get thier feelings hurt by girls who won't date them because they're deaf, and that's so not me. I want to be with anyone who's a nice guy and would give anyone a chance. I guess i'm rambling, but my question is, am i totally weird for doing this and does anyone think I'm offensive? Please be super honest!
:aw:

well i have seen a guy whos super cute, but never actually spoken to him and he has since moved away, so i guess more of a what if thing.

Learning ASL is a good thing regardless. And you're not weird for thinking the guy was cute. It matters what's inside, not the trappings. If you meet someone that is deaf, blind, etc, there's no reason to fear the unknown. You learn as you go. If he happens to be deaf you learn to communicate and go from there. Just remember that people all do things differently, and get to know how they do it and why.

I would say no, since you trying to open yourself to any kind of guy. But there is the fact, are you looking for only a deaf guy to date or would you date a hearing guy too? Also, why not met a deaf women and be friends with her and learn ASL though her? Also, are you learning sign somewhere?

ya, like i said i dont just want to date deaf guy, but im open to it. And i've been trying to learn ASL on my own with a book, which has been working quite well, but i think i'd learn more easily and quickly if I had someone to practice with, which i dont. And i would totally love to have a female friend to help me learn!!

Sounds like you're on the right track. Some places have Community Centers that offer low cost intro ASL and most colleges offer it. Look into what resources are in your area and you might come across a mentor to help.

Why do you feel weird? we are like everyone else. Is it because how some people portray us?

Hearing people marry deaf people all the time.

If you are interested in dating a deaf guy just because he is deaf, that IS weird. But, since you appear more to just be curious about deafness, ASL, and meeting new and different people, and you're also not exclusively seeking deaf guys, I'd say there's nothing wrong with you. Rest easy. :)

It's great that you are learning ASL on your own, but you need to practice it with other, more advanced signers. You need to get hooked into the local deaf community. SLC, I'm guessing, has a large deaf community. do some google searches and find out where they meet. Maybe someone from this board can point you in right direction (HoHDougRN is from Utah, and so is Fair_Jour). Find out when a social activity is happening and go. It might take a little bit of nerves, but just take a deep breath, walk up to someone and introduce yourself in sign: HELLO, MY NAME ____. ME HEARING. LEARNING ASL. NICE TO MEET YOU. Kindness and humility will take you far, and eventually you'll meet your deaf (or hearing) sweetheart. Good luck!

I am a deaf teen guy, this doesn't offend me, but I have dated several hearing girls before, they were very interested to learn sign language from me. I know English, ESL, and ASL. I don't think it's weird for a hearing girl like a deaf guy, I believe that deaf people are PEOPLE. I don't feel weird that I am deaf dating a hearing girl, I feel like I am normal. I also have many hearing friends, growing up in hearing family, and had been deaf since I was diagnosed from serious illness after a month in hospital since I was born. If you want to contact me, then feel free to send me a message. I wish you a best luck on learning ASL :D

Best of luck and welcome to AD!
