A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

Yesterday I attended a church via a family's invitation. The people in the pews around me practically fought each other to have the honor of showing me the passages in the Bible being discussed. It is really not a peeve, if you know what I mean.
Better than having them pray for you to have your hearing restored. "You're deaf. Oh that's so sad. I'll pray for you."

I so dislike that. I've had that said to me before too.

If it is a stranger saying it, they don't know which of us welcome it and which don't. I think it is usually said with good intentions.

My is when people start yelling at me... I am hoh so yelling does make it easier to hear but if I was deaf it's wouldn't change a thing.....

100% agree saying I'm deaf and then people shout at me as if thats helping.

My only other is when people say you don't look deaf.

Why? cause im not in 70s, because I can speak and the single best one gave me:

Lady: you don't look deaf to me?

Me: why is that?

Lady: because your hearing aids are black, every other one of you I've met has them beige

Me (internally): Oh my days! what?!!!

Me (out loud): That's so they match my hair and are less obvious

Lady: But do they even work the same?

Me: They are the same

Me (internally): *Crying*

This interaction was ignorance not nastiness so I don't hold it against her but it was one I definitely had to keep my cool with.

I have had this said when I was in america with work. I was sitting next to my bosses wife who started asking me about my hearing (which I am fine with) but she then asked if I thought god was punishing me because I am an atheist and she would pray for god to return my hearing to me.

Well that escalated quickly.

People who think I care that their cousin/sister/wife/barista is also deaf. You know, whenever someone finds out you are deaf and respond with "oh, my cousin is deaf" or when a family member comes back from the store and says "we were served by a deaf person". I understand they have good intentions and I generally respond with "oh ok, nice" but I actually really could not care less about it. It doesn't help me in any way to know about it nor do I particularly want to meet them or ask about them or anything.

Interestingly enough, you don't hear people say the same thing to people who wear glasses.

When have you ever seen a person's hearing restored from praying? I'm going to guess ... NEVER.

There are other methods available, they may or may not work, wanna try them with me?

Its all or nothing. It is a unknown scientific method. We gotta know and learn.

my deaf pet peeve is , you dont look deaf, or how can you speak so well. or you can hear me even when I dont get all of what they are saying. they be like, you heard me, but when I tell them I didnt understand them, they think I am lying.

I get this a lot too. 'oo oh oo eh ow oo ee o eh Oo a ee ee' (this is a literal transliteration of how I hear 'you dont look deaf, how can you speak so well, you can hear me) It may well be a foreign language for what good it does for me, if it werent for 50 odd years of lip-reading and 'filling in the blanks' (wheel of fortune style) once I had learned to read.

Its been over 40 years for me and I had to learn how to read lips at an early age, not that I had a choice. If I did... It wouldn't be a spoken language, sorry hearing folks, this is just me. I like my ASL where I can FEEL ... LIKE ME. I know most hearing folks will not understand this. We are not broken. The man upstairs made us this way, IF he said we are good this way, why can't you hearing people feel the same? *sighs* :(
