Name Signs

Hah, I see we have the same hairstyle. :)
I am glad it made you feel better. I would hate to think my only use would be to stick my head into spaces to light them up.
Bald people dont waste their hormones growing hair. lol

My name sign is the sign for "motorcycle" with the throttle hand as an "E" because I love riding my motorcycle. This name was given to me from my deaf friend and as part of the deaf community being given a "sign name" is significant and truly a special thing. I didn't think that it was such a significant thing at first, or even understand why it was so hard for someone to just come up with one. But now I have been blessed with a "right of passage" by knowing that I have been accepted to such a phenomenal community!!!

I gave a name sign to my stepdaughters ex boyfriend now, His name was Tyler and he rode a motorcycle, The name sign was a "T" like toilet and doing the throttle on a motorcycle...lol

I don't have name sign, but my name is easy to fingerspell, 3 letters, and 2 of them are the same :)

My name sign is a 'j' swinging over my face like bangs because back in middle I always styled my hair very EMO like. I went to a Deaf get together and I was soooo shy. I didn't look at anyone really and a few people tried to talk to me but I was so nervous and they just randomly started calling me 'j'. I no longer have my hair in my face so it confuses everyone why my name sign is that. Lol I will never forget it because it is special to me. I think after that day I wanted to learn more and grow. I do believe name signs have to be special to you. You can't name yourself, someone has to do it. They also have to be deaf too. (Sorry that I seem to be repeating what others had said but it's true.)I would get so mad(I am a hot headed person) when my other family would give each other name signs(none of them are deaf). I am not Deaf either but it felt disrespectful because it felt like they did not fully understand the importance of a name sign. I might be over the top when it comes to names but mine was special. Basically don't rush to get a name sign. Like someone just said "it is common to not have a name sign." Sorry I was just kind of ranting.

Had a name sign given to me by my elementary school teachers and it kind of stuck ever since. It's the T sign used as the water sign on the chin. Alternatively, they'd do the same thing with my last name, since it starts with a W and of course, used like a water sign. Funny coincidence: my birth sign is Cancer, a water sign!

My name sign a k circling down by my head for curls, but I never have my hair down unless I am taking pics or I straighten my hair.

Interestingly enough, I don't have a sign name. Unless friends have one they use behind my back. Point finger and thumb curled together. :)

The custom of name-giving being taken seriously is quite common among many cultures around the world. Some countries hold sacred rituals in the naming of a baby for example. Deaf Culture, is no different. It is a real culture and should be respected and not taken lightly. If you are just having 'bit of fun' learning sign language and 'making up sign names' this is blalant mockery imo. Many in the Deaf Community would see it as such and would take that as an insult.
