Yeah I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it... YouTube has a video of an instructor where his gun went off and got his leg, he also did a follow up video of the healing, had a nice sized hole in his leg for a long time... went from mid thigh and out his calf if I remember correctly.

From what I have read, "Glock leg" is a result of carelessness. You do not have your finger on the trigger unless you are ready to fire. Those people that holster their firearm with their finger on the trigger are careless and not obeying very basic firearm safety rules. Sadly, there are many states that do not require you pass a firearm safety course in order to get your CCL.
 
My 2 cents worth, a lot of the officers I have known, liked carrying a gun because it made them feel powerful and the badge gave them the sense of control over others. Really? they need to get over themselves.
Compensation i am sorry to say when the gun has a longer barrel and it is only 4 inches. I do not know how a lot of them keep their job but is does not seem to take much to be a cop.
I know they are only human and have bad days in that instant they really should not be out with both a chip and a gun. If you have not noticed there is a big division in the people inside the USA, "The Government" "the Cops" and then the working class. You folks do remember those 2 other groups are supposed to be working for us, we pay them, now it looks like we pay them to shoot us as well. Yep more to be said for "papers please" soon they will stop saying please.
BTW, I carry a gun and will be happy to use it, rape and robbery is not on my bucket list of things to do.

Cops are actually well educated, Having to Continue education as they work I forgot what the required credit hours are per year to stay on the force, I know this because I have been through the training and testing to get on the list In the past.
You don't just walk in , fill an app and wala have a cop job, that's not how it works.
NO they don't feel that they have a gun and badge that they are powerful BUT Yes some do have big egos and bad attitudes and that gets them into trouble ( I have a lot of friends and family on the forces ) those new kids go out with an attitude thinking theyre all bad ass now and end up being a disliked cop, if you noticed its the older cops who are mellow and stay out of shit. They want to do their 20 years and retire with a penson ( but some of these young trigger happy cops are making it hard on all the others and the older peers don't like that at all.
Get your facts in order before classifying "everyone" into one group with your assumptions that all cops are blowhards. It would be like saying you are skittish because theres a cop around. Scary knowing theres some carrying with your state of mind.
we are paying for them? yeah partial, don't forget they pay into the same taxes as we do, so they pay themselves as well.
 
Being a cop is being in a different class now.

My state of mind would not to be shoot someone because they have a gun, that has not being pulled out and aimed at me, anyway here are the requirements for officer school, considering you need a higher degree to be a CPA, teacher or Clergy and those jobs do not have you carting a gun around. I did say a lot of officers not all, you have a good point about the older more seasoned officers, I will agree with you there.
Maybe the officers in the southern US are the ones I draw my thinking on, I knew more officers there.

If you prefer Group than class use that word.

I won't apologize for my previous one because I am but a product of my upbringing. I have been around the block a time or two, and not only that, I am also a convicted felon.
And yet, I cannot help but feel, and notice the changes in confrontations with the police.
The old-timers, I love them.
The rookies, not so much and I let them oldies know.

This is true as far as signing up, but once you get out of the cadet school you are required to earn your bachelors and continue your education by X amount of credits per year ( they have this in the paper work once you are recruited as a Cadet and before you are placed on the force ) if you don't get X amount of credits they suspend you, then if you still don't, termination is next. and this is on going even after a Bachelor degree is earned as they want you to keep up on the laws and other legal stuff.
Some continue in criminology to become detectives or crime scene investigators or whatever they are aiming for in their careers.
