Hi, all! <3

I've always been interested in ASL, but something always got in the way. With a new idea, I have an excuse to delve more into ASL than the fingerspelling I already know.

Just for fun, I wanted to make a little fancomic where one of my favorite characters (Harper Row) says something funny about a random book recently released by DC Comics, pretending she's a news anchor, lol. I was going to have her with a partner, Miss Martian, but it didn't feel right. So I traded Miss Martian in for Jericho, a mute character who uses ASL. I've always wanted to draw a comic with ASL in it! <3 I've been reading up on ASL grammar and trying to get a sign a day in, but I know I'll make lots of mistakes. I'm hoping some caring people here will help me be more respectful of how ASL should be presented accurately. :)

I can't get skype (I don't have my own home internet. Using library right now), so any assistance will have to be with video tutorials and typed explanations (sorry!!)

Thanks for reading! <3

Welcome :) I love comic books, tell me how it works out. although on the other side, marvel, but did you know in the original comics the arrow was deaf and Deadpool was one of the only people to use sign with him. too bad the avengers already missed that up.

I'm going to try to make it one frame, though if what Jericho is saying something intricate, it could trickle down a bit. Trying to limit Harper to one or two lines, and Jericho to the same. I pick a random recent book to flip through and find a panel that looks like something funny can be said about it. Harper says that part (and she has an attitude, so it's a little negative) and Jericho, being a super nice guy, signs something to counter what Harper says, lol. Something like when, in a recent Nightwing book, Nightwing picked up a doll for a friend and Harper would say how he plays with dolls like a baby, and Jericho would sign that she had commented how she thought the doll was cute and wished she had one, too. Or if there's a lot of nice things in the book, Jericho would overlook "countering" Harper to point out the fluffiness in the book instead and how nice it was. :D

I had no idea they had ANY deaf characters! Or that Deadpool knew sign language at all! (and hey, I can use Deadpool sometime when Jericho needs a substitute, lol!!) And yeah, they mess up everything these days, lol. Some of us in the comic fan community have learned to laugh at it, but sometimes it's too insulting. I wouldn't buy anything new from DC or Marvel even if I could afford it, I borrow the books briefly from a friend who buys. Always looking for SOMETHING good. Once in a while, there's one page that is, lol!

:welcome:

"Mute"? Is Jericho Deaf and not oral, or does he actually have a physiological reason why he can't speak, such as damaged vocal chords?

Thank you for the welcome! :)

Oh sorry! Yes, he's marked as mute. He has damaged vocal chords.

* edit;
I was under the impression that "mute" was anyone who was non-speaking. Is this not true?
