While severing someone’s head and attaching it to another person’s body sounds like something straight out of a science fiction or horror movie, some real-life scientists say they are planning to do just that – as early as next year.

Italian neuroscientist Dr. Sergio Canavero made headlines last year when he announced his plans to perform the first human head transplantin 2017. Since then, he’s recruited Chinese surgeon Dr. Xiaoping Ren to work with him, and now has found a volunteer patient for the procedure: a Russian man named Valery Spiridonov.

Spiridonov suffers from Werdnig-Hoffmann Disease, a rare and often fatal genetic disorder that breaks down muscles and kills nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that help the body move. Spiridonov is confined to a wheelchair; his limbs are shriveled and his movements essentially limited to feeding himself, typing, and controlling his wheelchair with a joystick.

In its September issue, The Atlantic profiles Spiridonov and the two scientists who hope to perform the experimental – and highly controversial – procedure.

“Removing all the sick parts but the head would do a great job in my case,” Spiridonov told the magazine. “I couldn’t see any other way to treat myself.”

Many scientists have spoken out against Canavero and Ren’s plans, accusing them of promoting junk science and creating false hopes. One critic went so far as to say the scientists should be charged with murder if the patient dies, a very likely outcome.

I don't think this procedure is going to be successful.

That will be very risky for head transplant and chances of this procedure wouldn't be successful.

Kind of scary. .. imagine it would work?

Zombie nation :dizzy:

I wonder if the new head will be put back on like this guy's head! LOL !

Always gotta make fun of a serious issue...

This story has been floating around for a while- as shown in the thread Reba posted the link to. Even so it likely will not happen or.. be successful any time soon.

Interesting theory....

If the theory is accurate, it sure will work wonders for him ;)

I suggest you to read @DeafDucky's links.
You'll get my post then

Wouldn't bother... I'm in the elite club of her ignore list so that's why she didn't comment on the links.

There is SOME truth to the "Russian dog" mentioned above; the doctor who started it actually had ideas about heart and lung transplants before they became more viable for humans. It was from there he went to the whole head transplant angle. How much of it is true I don't know- there's theories everywhere on google that says it may not be entirely true.

Does that also work on quotes of your posts?

Yes- with this software it does. When AD used to be on vBulletin, quotes from ignored people could be seen by the ignoree (the person doing the ignoring). But with this software...the person doing the ignoring can't see anything written by the person they're ignoring.

Can they see posts where someone tags an ignored person?
