Hello, I am an Autistic adult. Growing up my parents focused on making me act like a neuro-typical(NT). I can now usually pass for a rude, stuck up NT. I have central auditory processing deficits and can't understand what people are saying with background noise. Speaking is difficult and there are times when I just can't force words out.

I would like to learn ASL. I looked at my local community college but the Deaf community has started a petition to get the teacher there removed as unqualified and unethical. I feel totally lost on where to start.

:welcome:

Perhaps someone in the Deaf community can put you in touch with a class or teacher that is qualified.

Welcome, I also have capd. It is great that you want your learn. I wish you the best of luck :)

Welcome! Those are excellent reasons to learn ASL..... it's possible that you'll find that signing is easier then speaking.

:welcome: Windhound! I have learning disabilities and possibly CAPD. I was in Special Education as a young child for speech and language and someimes speaking is not easy for me either. If you live in the United States you can look up "Deaf culture" with your state name, or online by phrases like "Deaf center" or "Deaf resources" and maybe find resources by contacting someplace you find. Hope you can find another class!
