Collect cans for recycle?

Someone I know who collect cans and bring them to recycle. They got $13.00 and $20.00 dollars.

Recycle cans for 5 cents and glasses for 10 cents.

Have you gone to recycle before?

I have. In Michigan, there are 10 cents on cans and bottles refund. I have recycled cans/bottles from work and earn $ for my work to used. I forgot what they used the money for.

Now I am in Arizona where there is no refund for cans/bottles. They would give cash for cans and anthing that is aluminium.

Buffalo,

Ah, interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Oh, I should have said aluminium and forget to add plastic like water bottle on my topic.

Anyway, This info for anyone who might try that to get cash for whatever needs like gas or foods or save money.
I know 5 or 10 cents is not enough but it's worth trying.

Recycling cans is also good for the environment.

It depends on the state.

Texas does not have recycling fees. New York does.

When I was in New York, they would charge me extra for any beverage that used recyclable containers such as cans and bottles. For instance, a 12-pack of soda that cost $2.99 would actually cost me $3.59 because each can was 5 cents and I had to pay an extra of 60 cents. Of course, when I recycle that 12-pack... I get 60 cents back.

It was common among fraternities and sororities to go running all over campus to collect recycled bottles/cans and turn them in at local grocery stores for money for fundraising.

I do! I like riding my bike and trying to find cans from kids drinking in the woods. Heck, everyone wins out...... you're picking up litter, you're making money, you're helping the enviroment, you're stimulating the ecnomy ( the people who collect the recycling sell the stuff they get to people who make stuff out of it) ....Even the ones that are squshed (sp?) I'll put in the regular recyling bins.

I do collect the cans and bottles once a while. The problem is that we shouldn't pay the extra fee if some cans are not refunded in our state.

I think that it is so stupid for any store owner to order the cans that cannot be refunded.

Another issue, a label says "10 cents in NH, CA, etc... , 5 cents in MA, CT, RI, etc." Do you think that it is a ridiculous that they have different prices for the cans? I think that they should be the same price no matter what state are you in.

I don't think we pay extra for non-refundable bottles/cans. Look at your receipt the next time you buy cans that aren't refundable (remember the price!).

My late father like this law because the alley behind his shop is more cleaner. No more sweeping up those broken bottles.

The trouble with Michigan's 10 cent per can/bottle is some wise guy in Ohio would gather up the cans/bottles and bring them to Michigan to get the money. I have heard of it in the news now and then. That is why many places put limit of 20 dollars of refunding the bottles/cans.

Oh, that's really good idea. I didn't think of it. Next time, I shouldn't buy the non-refundable bottles/cans. That is easy to solve this problem.

I wished that I have the receipts to show the manager about it because the extra fees were on the list. Maybe, the manager doesn't care about us as customers.

No, you misunderstood me. Why don't you buy a refundable can and see if there is a 5 cent added to it? And buy a non-refundable can and see if there is a 5 cent added to it? Let us know what you find.

I recycle all the time. I clean and save my cans, and then if I am broke and need something, I take them to the store and get what I need.

I do recycle bottles and cans.

From Waste Management recycling center:

Plastic 0.97 per lbs
Alum cans - 1.57 per lbs.

(all recycling center rate varies)

I tend to crush the cans and fill the bag, makes more room and also more weighs the more cash.

All types of plastic? or just #1 (PETE) and #2 (HDPE)?

I think maybe they mistake the calcuator how much I should earn from 3 bags of cans. I should refund about $15.00.

FYI, in my state Indiana doesn't allow crush cans. If they see crush cans, they won't give me money

Where did you recycle them? Was it in a state where they pay you by the bottle/can or by the weight?

How about if you buy more Sprite cans and drink all of them so that you get more money everyday so that you would be fat and rich?

The machine need to be able to read the barcode. Is that reason?
If not, why don't you ask them for the reason? You got me curious.

I used to help my grandfather with crushing the cans when I was a kid/teenager. That way he can recycle cans in a bag and get $$$ by the weigh of it.

I do not know if this kind of recycling are still going in New Zealand today.

You are not alone. Happens to me in the past when I was in college. It pissed me off when I worked hard to collect aluminum cans and had several bags of it. They gave me the amt like what you had. I think that I forgot to crush the cans and pack in more in bag to make it heavier so I can make more $$ per weight.

I've heard someone collecting pop tabs (removed tab from pop/beer cans) and said if they collect to fill bag of it. They get $500 for it. I dunno how that work. It doesn't make sense to me cuz tabs are made of aluminum too.
