It depends on the parent, I guess, since they are the ones who foot the bill. I've seen kids in 6th grade with cell phones.

I don't have a cell phone and I'm 16 turning 17 in January. I refuse to get one until university. I don't need one right now. I think that a cell phone is only necessary for young kids if you live in the city. I live in a rural area and I don't even think that people my age that live here need a cell phone. It's ridiculous.

i know one parent who has a 7 years old daughter own a cell phone but only limited phone number to the parents or grandparents only. she couldnt call anyone. the reason is that her dad tend to go away on business. so she can call her dad anytime.

my opinion, if any kids happen to have friends and happen to have cell phone then parent can control the numbers that kids can call. it depends how mature kids are and know how to take care of cell phone. my girl, who is 8 yrs old. i feel that she isn't ready to carry it. BUT she hasn't ask me for cell phone yet.

did your girl ask for you about cell phone? how old is she?

My daughter got hers at the age of 8 courtesty of my ex hubby. I was furious but it was out of my hands.

Now, she is 12 years old and seems very mature with her phone (I hope).

I brought my son his first cellular phone when he was 13, and now he's 14. My other son who's 9 is still too young to have a cellular phone so when he reach the age of 13 or 14 then he will have his own cellular phone.

for whatever reason it may be my age limitation would be based on the child itself.

if it comes to safety reasons as long as the child understands and knows how to use the phone-

I do know some people that spent hours and hours dealing with the twisted corded landline phones just to talk and talk now those kids now got it easy being mobile and being able to talk than be cooped up in a small space for hours and hours.

It's up to the parents.

When I was a kid, cell phones weren't that common. Now, a lot of kids have cell phones.

If you want to give your kid a cell phone, it's recommended you get a phone plan that can be easily managed by the parents such as how many minutes the kids can have, when they can use it, etc. That way, the kids don't abuse their privileges.

don't they have some type of cell phone rates like pay as you go or prepaid cards? those would be a great asset to prevent those $500 cell phone bills in the mail!

I go with pre-paid plan for my son so that way the bill won't drain my wallet. lol That's why he's careful not to use up all his minutes before the month is up.

Depends upon the maturity of the child, and if they are "responsible".

One of my boys has had a phone for 2 years, and one had a phone and lost it, along with the charger....he's very absent-minded, loses keys, wallet, etc.! So no phone for him, he's not responsible!...He's angry at present....(not my problem)....He's gotta "man up" before he'll get another phone! And it won't be for Xmas.

Most kids calls, in my opinion, should be home to mom or dad. So how about when the child is able to read and write well enough to sent text?

My niece got first cellphone when she was 10. Because she is mature at home and school. She got good grades. My brother allowed her to use cellphone and text message for limited. He have to watch what she type. She will be 12 next week.

My other niece in the law really want to get cellphone at teenager but her parents aren't allowed her because bad grades and trouble at school.

I have noticed that my nieces and nephews are starting to get cellphone when they're 13 and above.

If I had kids of my own, I wouldn't want them to spend hours on the cellphone. If it's used for text messaging then that's okay. There are some neurosurgeons out there who believes there are a connection between cellphone usage and brain tumours. Scary, huh?

That's new challenge for parents to handle with high-tech gadget for their children that we never thought unlike in past we live thru that time.

There is only good thing that cell phone allow the parents to track their children where they are. Only bad, they can eat out your pocket when not well responsible to handle the amount of use.

My aunt got my cousin her cell phone at a young age and my aunt has since been questioning my mom as to why she has not purchased me or my brother a cell phone. It is not my mother's job to pay for a cell phone and the bill. It is mine, and I am not yet prepared to pay for one.

I got my first cell when I was 16 mainly because I was dating a boy and it was all long-distance calls. That racked up the phone bill big time on our landline. They tried the "phone card" but I would use up all the minutes in one night on the phone. I think 16 is an OK age for cells but I disapprove of elementary school kids having them. If they need to call home, that's what pay phones are for or even going down to the office and using that.

I got my first mobile phone when I was 8 or 9. This was only because I am a horse rider and if I was riding out, my mum wanted me to be able to call for help if I ever needed it. I think now though, a mobile is more of a fashion statement than a means of communication for younger children. I do agree though, that it is the choice of the parents and should be based on the maturity of the child.
