My wife, nirenameit and i just found out we are having baby #3. I am hearing and so is our son, but my wife is deaf in one ear and HOH in the other and our daughter was born almost totally deaf. What are our chances of this baby being born with hearing issues also? Thank you

It really depends on the reason why your wife is deaf in one ear and HOH in the other. There might be a good chance or very little chance. As long as she stays healthy and everthing, there might be a slim chance, but it all depends on the reason why ur wife is. Like for my wife and I, the chance of us having a deaf baby is very slim, cause her deafness was due to pregancy sickness when her mother was pregant.

I guess it would be 50%/50% for having child with deaf...

Im deaf, My husband is hearing, My ex-bf is hearing.. All of our three kids are hearing..

Sean my middle child has high frequently hearing loss.. but he doesn't need hearing aids, so far hes doing great... his hearing was loss due of Radiations and Chemotherapy he went thru for his Medulloblastoma (brain Tumor) that he had in 2004-2005 He's doing great :)

Oldmobileman, I would said More children born hearing with deaf parent/parents I know TWO deaf parents has 2 deaf child, and two other deaf parents has 3 kids all deaf I believe.. She's member here.. but she might be very busy, I will see if she could answer your question too. she has a deaf brother too.

Yeah, it depends.

My fiance is deaf, and his 2 brothers are deaf as well, so I think there is a good chance of us having a deaf child in the future. (I'm deaf but no one in my family/relatives are deaf - I wasn't born deaf).

I was the first deaf person in my family to be born. My parents didnt know why cuz my mom was not sick with anything and there is no history of deafness in either of their families. Then, my brother was born..deaf too. If my parents had a 3rd child together, more likely the child would be deaf also. What is so interesting is that my parents split up and had children in their 2nd marriages. My dad had 3 more boys with my stepmom..all hearing. My mom had 1 more boy with my stepdad...he is hearing.

My ex hubby is hearing..my daugher with him is hearing. My current hubby is hearing and my son with him is hearing. If I had kids with a deaf guy from a strong deaf family, then the chances of having a deaf children would probably be higher.

My brother and his fiancee dont have kids. She is hearing so I doubt they will have deaf kids but never know!

Forgot to answer your ???...I think there is a 50/50 chance that your 3rd child will be deaf. Depends on why your wife is deaf.

It can be a lot lower if his wife the only deaf in the family. It can also be a lot higher if there is a lot of deaf in her family too. Really can't say 50/50

They have a child who was born completely deaf and the mother is HOH so they have a higher chance. Look at my parents...no deaf at all in their family history and yet they had 2 profoundly deaf children. That is why for Oldmobileman , I say 50/50 cuz they already have a deaf child and a hearing child.

My best friend was born profoundly deaf...both parents are hearing and family history has no hearing and her parents had 4 of them.

1st son, hearing
2nd son, deaf
3rd son, hearing
Daughter (my best friend) deaf.

Amazing, isnt it?

Same with my other friend.

Grandmother, mother, daughter, son and father are deaf.

Daughter married a deaf guy and he is the only deaf in his family. They thought they had 100% chance in having a deaf child and their child turned out to be hearing. Her husband the only deaf in his family, but it was not due to sickness, it was a gene that caused him to be deaf.

You really cannot answer that question with any degree of certainty. It all depends on the causes of the hearing losses in your family. It sounds like the genentic mutation "connexin 26" can be removed as a cause of deafnees in your family. If I remember correctly, if the heaering loss is caused by connexin 26, there will be a severe to profound hearing loss. That would be the case with your wife and child. But if it is connexin, that would mean that you and your wife are both carriers of the gene. If this is the case, then every child you have, has a 1 in 4 chance of have a hearing loss. Also they have a 50-50 chance of being a carrier of the gene.
If you are concerned about it, you can always do the genetic counseling thing. They will take a blood sample from you and your wife, analyze it, and tell you the chances of having a child with a hearing loss, and many other "birth defects". In the past few years, doctors have made some incredible discoveries in human DNA. A couple years ago, no one knew about connexin 26. Now they know it is a major reason for the amount of senesoneural hearing losses in the US.
If you are concerned, get a blood test.

Thanks

I guess we will just have to wait until this baby is born to find out. Which will be in July, too long from now, she has morning sickness and is moooody! lol. Im glad to hear your imput so i can know what to expect when this one is born. It doesnt matter to me if this baby is deaf or HOH or hearing, just wanted to see what our probability is. My wife was born deaf in one ear, but no one knows why. Deafness does run in her family. Her grandfather is deaf but her mother is not.

Yesterday I was reading over some medical documents from my daughters med files. WHile reading the report from the geneticist, I read about another genetic mutation called "conexxin 30". I have not had a chance to read up on conx 30. From reading about your wifes hearing loss and the hereditary loss, this may be related. As I said earlier, the level of hearing loss with your wife does not fit into the conexxin 26 profile. Check out conexxin 30.

It could be anything.

I was born hearing and became deaf due to a common childhood illness that was not taken care of properly. Technically, I have hearing genes. If I had a kid with a hearing woman, my child would very likely be hearing.

However, if I was born deaf... then the chances are greater that the child will be deaf.

In your case, it's a half and half situation. Since you're hearing, your wife is deaf, your son is hearing, and your daughter is deaf... that leaves the next child as 50/50.

That's not always true. I was born deaf but there is no history of deafness in my family. My brother was ill with rubella while my mother was pregnant with me. We think my mother contracted rubella from him. I am not likely to pass on the genes for deafness as there is no history of deafness in my family.

If I were to marry a CODA/hearing or a d/Deaf man with no history of deafness, chances are good that all of my kids would be born hearing.

Now if I were to marry a CODA or a d/Deaf man with a history of deafness in the family, that would be different.

There are some cases that someone that don't have the genes makes it into a gene later in the family line. You might be deaf, then your child could be hearing, and their child can be deaf and that startes a chain. Then your deafness mutated into the gene

CONGRATS!!! on having a 3rd kid.

In my case, my ex and I are deaf. I am the only guy who is deaf in my family. I was born deaf, cause unknown. The ex lost her hearing because her parents didn't take care of her. (Figures) Her family has a history of hearing loss (and some mental illness). :whip:

We have a daughter who is hearing. So, she is hearing. There was a way less than 50 percent chnace that she would be born deaf.

In your case, just wait and see til the kid pops out.

Yeah, I forgot to add that. If the born-deaf thing is genetic, the chance is greater than if you were born-deaf cuz of disease.

To answer your question, I'd say 50-50 chance...

For me:

My mom doesn't have any imparement, my dad doesn't have any imparement, my brother doesn't have any imparement, and I'm the only one who's hearing, visual, and speech impaired!! My family history doesn't have any impairement! To me, I found it strange why I'm hearing, visual, and speech impaired...
