Prenatal Crying

Prenatal Crying

September 13, 2005

An infant's first cry may occur not in the delivery room, but in the womb, researchers have found.

With the help of video-recorded ultrasound images, New Zealand investigators found that a group of third-trimester fetuses showed "crying behavior" in response to a low-decibel noise played on the mother's abdomen.

Fetuses showed a "startle" response to the noise, along with deep inhalations and exhalations, an open mouth and a "quivering" chin – all signs of crying. The behavior, seen in 11 fetuses, began as early as the 28th week of pregnancy. The findings are in the Archives of Disease in Childhood: Fetal and Neonatal Edition.
Now, be careful about popping balloons around your pregnant stomachs!

You don't want an imprint of this face expression sticking out on your stomach for everybody to see!

(A side note: is this amazing?! This is an ultrasound of a baby SMILING !!!

I've always see reports that if parents let their baby listen to classical music while in the womb, the're more likely to be intelligent, and the opposite for more modern, simple music.

So what have I learned?

Baby listening to Britney Spears:

Baby listening to Beethoven:
(yes, this is amazing)
