Anyone have this? My old audi is thinking that this may be what I have after my ASSR results..

What would your audi suggest as a "solution" to your hearing "difficulties"?

From what I have read, ANSI cannot be corrected with hearing aids, since the hairs (cilia) are normal, but the transmission of the signals from the cilia to the auditory nerve is where the problem lies.

CI's worked on some folks, not in others per an article that I googled.

Alicia: Have you talked with an ENT surgeon about it?

Actually I read numerous articles that suggested some people do well with hearing aids or CI's ...I haven't gone to see the surgeon yet because no one has gotten back on a date for my appt yet and my current audi is gone for 2 weeks..it's all very frustrating actually and I'm getting fairly annoyed. NO one is giving me a solution which is getting on my nerves

Considering a lot of specialists on AN and ANSD state that HA and CI only work in a small percentage of cases - the most practical and relaiable "solution" would be to get a TTY or VCO phone (like the Uniphone both you and I have) and to learn ASL.

Apparently even if one does well initially with HAs (or CI) it doesn't mean it will be a reliable solution since the issue (like APD and CAPD) isn't a physical hearing issue as much as the brain being unable to process and interpret sound in a reliable way.

As for Alicia's condition- I have no comment. To the best of my knowledge I didn't have this "condition"-thus never "studied or googled".
From myriad Hearing difficulties hard to give anyone here any advice-other than see an ENT doctor. Hopefully can answer after examination.

Drphil - if you'd had AN or ANSD you'd have been told long before your CI surgery.

Also the pattern of your HL, and the fact that you have other deaf family members points to a genetic cause, not AN etc.

(Actually based on what you've said regarding that implant centre, I'd guess if you had AN or ANSD you wouldn't have 'quilified' for the CI there)

How long have you had hearing issues?

Just like here in the USA, if your medical condition is not life-threatening, they make you wait....and wait...

Anij I know I have a genetic factor - my father and all his brothers were all "hearing impaired". None was DEAF-however.
Thus my comment-your ENT doctor should be able to clarify what one's actual condition is-and go from there.

ya but here getting a CI eval appt is like 6 months+ ...and the health care isn't the greatest even tho its "free"
and I've had hearing issues since I was 16 (now almost 23) but I've always had ear issues with VERY frequent ear infections and burst my ear drum a few times too

Alicia: I guess I was lucky in going through the entire Cochlear Implant consideration in less than 4 months here in Toronto/Sunnybrook. Feb to July/07. Initial then physical to surgeon's decision-June 20. Operation July 12.
Perhaps info from Canadian Hearing Society/Toronto re: Hearing Help classes taken-assisted.
Also became bilateral DEAF- December 20,2006 and "fit OHIP criteria" to cover the $55,000.00 CDN.cost.

Again much success in your journey-now.

our care may be free but the wait times can suck... I'm waiting for a phone call from the ent to tell me when the next time he is in town. At least I found a great family doc who will keep pestering the specialists until we get word from them, but even that's a rarity sometimes.
