Phonetics has never been my forte. I know lots of words but I have no idea how to pronounce them correctly.

Right. But you have a great vocab and have fluent use of the language. That's why focus on enunciation is over rated.

Same here! I ask my SO if I'm pronouncing something correctly when I'm not sure. I even ask my co-workers too.

Ditto! In fact, it happened today at CI therapy. My therapist was looking over audiology cards, and one of them happened to say "bilabial". Being the immature person I am, I cracked up then I tried to pronounce it. I got it wrong, but I also saw the word "lingua-alveolar". Totally got that one right!! (SOMEHOW...)

Heck, I'm hearing and I still stumble over techinical jargon that I am unfamiliar with. Psychology can come up with some doosies! Throw parts of 4 or 5 words together and expect people to pronounce them.

I had to look up the word bilabial. Speaking of bilabial constants, I still have not forgotten how my class laughed at me when I mispronounced the letter w when I recited the alphabet to my 4th grade class. I was bewildered and I had no idea why people were laughing till my teacher got mad at them for for laughing at me for saying the letter w wrong.

I'm still reluctant to say the letter w 30 years later.

I'm going to try to write how I pronounce "w" for fun: dub-be-U (long u)

Most hearing folks just say "dub-ya". Yours is actually more accurate.

Yep. Hearing folks aren't so great with their pronunciations either. The correct way would be "double u."

I recall the time I was taking an IQ test, and the counselor was giving me an oral spelling test. I think I missed one word: he said "ak-wee-es" and I had no idea what the heck word that was. It turned out to be "acquiesce" which is a verb meaning to concur. I knew that word but thought it was pronounced the way it was spelled, "ak-kwise." So, my IQ was formally dropped down because of that, lol.

I would have thought it was pronounced the same as you did - the ak-kwise. I just learned something new!

I need to stop using big, long words when I have a tough time pronouncing them

I have always had a tough time with palomino, as in a horse. I keep thinking it's "pah-lo-meen-o, but I've been told it's wrong. (I don't emphasize the "h" in the "pah" part but it's the only way I know how to explain that "a" sound and not the "a" as in paper.

I'm sure you can roll the "r's" in French. Folk just gave up trying to teach me that.

Oh yeah, I'm not gonna try to roll my r's LOL but palomino doesn't have any r's in it and that's the one I keep getting wrong.

Pronouncing "r" is one I still struggle with and my first name begins with R. I usually prefer to use the abbreviated version. Saves unneccesary effort on my part. My hearing family still insist on using my proper name though.

Yes, but they're not palominos. My using that word frequently comes from work, its the name of a subgroup I work with. And they have nothing to do with horses

I can't say the r correctly in some words like rare. I get my steaks medium well done which is what I do NOT want.

Wow, that's terrible. You really wanting your steaks rare, I thought, would compel you to write that down at the point of ordering.....

"Lasagna" stumps me!...I've been told over and over how to pronounce it...still I get it wrong....I love Italian dishes, but just point out what I would like.....as for Parmesan Cheese, I just say "the stinky stuff".....also, the word "subsidary"...

As I can't say "R" at all, it is lucky I like medium steaks!
