I do not support any discrimination at all. I do support open-mindness and discussion. I also find it "offensive" when people just read articles and points of view and do not formulate their own by listening, watching, or reading on that subject. The inability to form our own judgements by exploring our own ideas, beliefs, and inner selves worries me. Don't let others tell you what to think/believe, find your own voice.

Whoa ! Wait a minute... Why would the Hollywood choice a normal hearing person actor as Retarded? Just like they did hire hearing people act like Deaf or DeafBlind to make the film. They look down at us because we are disabilities.

This is indeed a great discussion, very interesting!

I am curious to know, why Hollywood's intent in Tropic Thunder would be any different than their intent in other movies? Isn't hollywood's intent money making? After the movie is out, and the reactions might affect revenue, it is quite easy to say, my intent was to actually help the cause of the disabled. See, even the laws can be twisted to have them say what they do not say, that is why we have interpretations of the "legislators intent".

Whether or not this is hate speech, I really don't care. It is definitely offensive language. Is it any different than other offensive language? No. Does that condone it? No. Perhpas we are getting too used to accept things that are not acceptable. Debate is always appropriate and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, in some cases, that opinion forms out of own experience or because it comes from someone we trust and value. There is never a one way out or in.


The truth is that there are many possible ways to offend a person. We all have something that we could be called that is probably something we would prefer not to and would not want to have it portrayed in the movies.

The world is already a battlefield. There are words that need to be taken at face value, I do not think you can called someone the R word, and then say "oh, I meant it in a good way, I just want to foster the cause of the mentally ill!' And all of this "good intent" coming from people making money out of it, I really do not think so!

Now, if they were to show me a big check sharing the office box revenue with the institutions serving the mentally disabled, then I would believe the supposed "good intent". I hope I am misinformed and that this is in fact the case.

As usual, the only R word that is appropriate to always keep in mind : RESPECT

I am not sure what this means. Do you use a doctor to play a doctor character, do you choice a Christian if the character is Christian, do you hire a liberal if the character is liberal, or do you select a gay person if the character is gay in the movie? Actors act, they do not represent their real selves. What does it have to do with looking down at somebody?

Kalista meant that the word "retard" for the Deaf character or any disabilities, not Down's syndrome. We are not retarded and we are smart and can live and do many things as what hearing people live. As I know we do have some real Deaf people play the Deaf characters to portray what is like living in a Deaf world in the movies. But if hearing people portray as a Deaf person, they don't know what is like to be Deaf and also think that Deaf people don't know how to do things like hearing people are doing except to hear. So they gave us a bad name which we don't approve of. It is like looking down on us as if we are nothing important to them and that is discrimination, period.
