Dr. Robert Davila is the new president of Gallaudet...he is a pretty powerful deaf person. Marlee Matlin is a very famous deaf person, even people who don't know any deaf people know about her. But leaders...I'm not sure. Powerful, famous...you can be those things without being a leader.

Gary Malkowski, a Deaf Canadian was a popular politician in Canada.
Rob Ware, the current mayor of Cave Spring, Georgia, is a CODA if that helps. Cave Spring is where Georgia School for the Deaf campus is located. |

I don't know if Marlee is a leader or not. She is famous, she is inspirational (lots of articles right now about her inspiring deaf people to dance), she is a good role model, she is popular, she is beautiful. But I'm not sure that she's leading anything...to me you have to be in a position of influence to be a leader. So even though she is very famous...she doesn't really have major influence. Who knows, maybe in her new role on the Gallaudet Board of Trustees she will show more leadership.
But damn, I would love to meet her someday!

I just thought of something now.
Heather Whitestone McCallum, the first deaf lady to be crowned Miss America back in 1995. She has been an influence in the political community, so it would seem that she somewhat falls in that category.

She's not culturally Deaf though...she is "hearing impaired".
