A New Deaf School is coming!

It's the Las Vegas's deaf school, the Las Vegas Charter School of Deaf! Here's what the main page from LVCSD's website said.

Thank you for your interest in the Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

By way of introduction, I represent the Board of Directors of the LVCSD. We are a group of people comprised of educators, professionals, parents and Deaf Community members/leaders in the field of Deafness. We share a common unifying goal, which is to open a Charter school in the Las Vegas area (Clark County) for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. Children who attend LVCSD will experience success in their education and lives, thus enriching all they meet.

The LVCSD Board envisions a Charter school that provides a rich language and cultural enviroment instructing students in American Sign Language, English, reading, writing, mathematics and speech/lipreading that follows Nevada Department of Education standards.

Deaf and hearing professionals must be well prepared for this type of work, and have excellent communication and language skills to become highly-qualified and effective teachers.

Students who attend LVCSD will learn about living in a world of two cultures: Deaf and hearing. This will prepare them to be successful productive members of our community and society.

Today, LVCSD is hoping to move into their new home where Deaf and Hard of Hearing children will have an exciting and rewarding educational experience! The anticipated date for LVCSD to open is August 2008. LVCSD intends to be a model school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the state of Nevada.

In the last 6 years the LVCSD has been trying to open a Charter School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, here in the Las Vegas Valley. The LVCSD is represented by a Board of Directors comprised of educators, professionals, parents, and Deaf Community members/leaders in the field of Deafness.

Good news comes this year for the young children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The Clark County School District has decided to become a sponsor of the Charter School and will house children in grades K-3rd. Services such as the Bi-Bi program will help teach the Children more about the Deaf Culture and expose them to Deaf Adult Role-Models, as well as learn about new products and other services made for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This will prepare them to be successful productive members of our community and society.

DCC architects have been selected to be the designer for this project, and because funding is through donations and fundraising, DCC has amiably offered to provide services through pro-bono work. The Charter School is hoping to begin construction in August 2008, so long as a facility can be obtained. Charter schools for the deaf are a new trend, and one that I see as very exciting. Several states have opened charter schools for the deaf...I've got a listing of them somewhere. I'll look for it and post it here.

There is one in Phx, AZ that I wish MD has..it is called Sequois and both deaf and hearing kids attend there using ASL and English. It is awesome!

Yes, I've read about that one. That is the true meaning of inclusion. Deaf and hearing students being educated together in a bilingual atmosphere.

Oh yea...I would love for my hearing kids to attend a program like this. MD doesnt have one..oh well.

Since your life had changed while you were in Gallaudet Univeristy... now You are fluent in ASL.... I know you are teaching in some school .,,,Why dont you change your job to Sequios... it would make your day.. enjoying teaching deaf or hoh students there.. since you know oral.. also know english... it will lbe big benefits for you...What do you think???

Can't..my hubby has a very good job in the Pentagon with Dept of Defense. he tried looking for a Fed govt job with the same pay in Phx...nothing there. Besides we just bought a house...wouldn't be wise to make any major changes.

I personally know about this issue...I can't say how I know for obvious privacy reasons ...

I will say that there are some difficult obstacles that they are trying to work through right now. My fingers are crossed, though! Las Vegas is in dire need of this program to be erected and implemented as soon as possible. I wish them the best

Totally agree with you, not only Las Vegas, but the entire state of Nevada do need something like this for the deafies to boost their community. I would love to live in Vegas someday, but their deaf community quality scare me from moving there and I really hope this school will open!

Well some of my families live in Las Vegas, also my family usually go to Las Vegas for vacation or visiting the families in Las Vegas, I think I have been there probably more than 10 times, and also I am pretty tired of Washington so..

Minneapolis has two charter schools for the deaf - Metro Deaf School (K-8) and North Star Academy (9-12). Haven't seen them yet.

It is nice for deaf and hearing to be educated together. Obiviously that means the teacher have an ASL interpreter? What about a deaf teacher??? Reverse interpreting?? or the deaf teacher is out of luck?

Actually the LVCSD already have staffs that have alot of experience with the deaf culture, so they should know the sign language.

Yes. They could use a teacher using ASL with a voice interpreter, or the other way around. Kind of like the LOFT program at St. Rita works. But students, whether hearing or deaf, are expected to communicte with the teacher in sign. It is a truly bilingual atmosphere for all.

If you look at their website, and go to the Staff...you'll see that a lot of them have quite a bit of experience. The lady that's in charge, who is the Nevada RID President, helped me tremendously when i went to Vegas to visit my college. She quickly got me a free interpreter. She was okay (student interpreter), but I had one nevertheless. Good thing that I was able to speak for myself and lipread.

From what I heard from this interpreter that the Nevada RID is pretty much brand new, and they're getting a lot of members already. It's been since October, so I don't remember too much.

So, yay for Vegas to catch up! Maybe I'll give them a hand.

It s excellent especially for deaf from Hawaii. More deaf people who born or raised in Hawaii are moving to Las Vegas due to high life cost in Hawaii and Las Vegas is considered "9th" island for Hawaii community. Now there will be a deaf school in LV. Expect boom of Asian-American Deaf students.

Is there going to be a waiting list for this school? Where's the funding going to come from for this school? Is it going to be run down like other public schools in 8-10 years????? Will the kids of those well known or really big in the local deaf community be the firsts to get into this school??? Will there be discrimination, will the hard of hearing and hearing impaired be excluded from attending this school?? Will this school force oral on the deaf students or will it teach asl, our language???

Well, as far as I known, there are 85 percent of Nevada State population are in Reno and Las Vegas metro areas, so I have pretty high bet that there are more deaf people in Las Vegas or Reno than any other of the state of Nevada.

LVCSD = Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf, I am not sure what you mean by this? Also I am sure they will welcome the HH in that school.

No, but ASL of course. That school want to teach the deaf children to learn both of the worlds between the Deaf world and hearing world, so that the deaf children can live in hearing world on their own, while they can be in the Deaf world for their own cultural and language.
