I do that unfortunately! According to my wife that is! Nobody else has noticed. Maybe she's just trying to pick a fight with me.

Yeah, I think your wife is just trying to act like a wife... i.e. to nag and annoy you.. I have a feeling some females are going to be upset now..

One of the things that annoys me about hearies is that when someone finds out I'm deaf, they get all excited and say something to the effect...

"Hey! You're deaf?? That's kinda cool, man! Ya know, I'm kinda deaf in my right ear....blah, blah, blah!"

I swear, some hearie people are out to annoy you on purpose!

I seen the movie. I have the dvd, I own it. Its good. Lots of discrimination and lack of understanding by the hearing community is seen in this movie.

Yeah that documentary really got under my skin when I saw it for the first few times. I mean I didn't get the Deaf angle. As a hearie I could not understand why the deaf people didn't want that little girl to hear via a CI. The film got me very upset...and normally I am mister mellow-yellow. But then I told myself to try to listen to what the Deaf folks were saying. So I did and I began to see their point-of-view and I started to accept it. Sound and Fure (which I viewed again last night- I also own it) made a huge difference in my overall understanding of the Deaf world. I prize that documentary.

I am glad you see our side of our point-of-view of why we, Deafies, don't want the little girl to use the CI. I have not see the movie call "Sound and Fury" and I would like to see the movie. I understand what you are saying. Many hearies think that they can fix us with hearing aid or CI which it is not going to work at all. The parents think that doctors can fix our hearing loss to be able to hear, but it is a total loss because we have to live and struggle trying to understand in the hearing world without ASL. With the CI, it is just like hearing aids only better. The problem is having to put CI in the brain is a little ridiculous and silly. There is some advantages and a lot of disadvantages to CI. A lot of hearies just don't understand and won't listen to us as we have experience of what is like to be deaf or could not hear. They keep on pressuring us with CI, lipread, and talk without ever using the ASL. They want us to be like the hearing people. That is why we need to change their perspectives and see our side as a Deaf individuals.

Anoher thing I have noticed about some hearing people that annoys me, sometimes is frightening, is when they get absorbed into the Deaf culture and chastise the deaf for not following the norms of the Deaf culture.....

Example:

* I knew a hearing person that was studying ASL and constantly put their 'hearing culture' down for their treatment of the Deaf.

* Another hearing individual made an announcement at a deaf gathering by stating that they wanted " all of the deaf not to wear hearing aids and just sign to their heart's content and kick hearing people's ass."

* One hearing person went to the extreme of eliminating all sound from their home.

The above is hearing people going to the extreme for the sake of the Deaf culture.

Now I don't mind hearing people learning the language, the history, being advocate for equality, but going to the extreme of Deaf culture when they are not deaf themselves is a little.....scary.

or if the person knows youre deaf and they are having a conversation with you but yet they are covering their mouth with their hand and when you ask them to repeat what they said they get mad and yell at you - I SAID WHAT LINE ARE YOU ON?!! I dont need you to yell, just move your hand and speak to me.

It is so rare for a deaf person to find a hearie that signs. Once, as I was loading my Wal-Mart groceries into my cart, a deaf individual approached me from behind in order to sell me some bead necklaces and wristbands. When I signed back that I had no money, the deaf vendor took two steps back, smiled with a nod and walked away with a shocked expression on his face. This has happened to me several times too. Each time the deaf individual is totally surprised that I signed my response.

Hearies can’t communicate with the Deaf and so their bloopers are expected. Some are mean and mean people suck, but most (I would like to think) are just clumsy because they don’t know what to do/say to deaf people.

Right Anij, Some of those "Deaf peddlers" aren't who they say they are as being deaf, I had one that was signing so terrible, and I asked "Are you really deaf?" and this person would nods, instead of signing "yes" and then I asked what school did you attended? and then that person got real quiet and said I got to go and sell more of the ABC's cards, then I told this person, if you are not who you say you are, then you're only making yourself look real stupid, get a life, get a job, and stop embarrassing the deaf community, or I'll bring the whole deaf community to you, and You'll have to answer to them, this person got so scared and start running off.

Even worse they make the Deaf Community ( and ALL people with hearing loss) look bad ... seriously, I'm a college student, I know deaf doctors, Lawyers, priests, teachers, .... but all that "positive - deaf are just like us" goes flying out the window when someones standing there begging for money solely because they can't hear !! It just makes me SOOOOOO angry. I've had many hearing people come up to me (knowing that I'm hoh/Deaf) and say how bad it makes "us"(hoh/deaf) look - it just reinforces all that crappy images of "deaf and dumb"(which in the 20/21centry means deaf and stupid, not deaf and mute)

... end rant

I just want to say that I am sorry about this post, I know that I was out of line when I made this post.I was in a mood. I know deep down in my heart that it's not true and I should know better and I know that most hearies are not bad. So I just want to say that I am sorry.
